Orica and Fertiberia have successfully conducted the inaugural blast utilizing low-carbon Technical Ammonium Nitrate (TAN) at the Canteras de Santullán quarry in Spain. This achievement comes as a result of their strategic partnership announced in September 2023, aimed at delivering sustainable blasting solutions through low-carbon TAN. Utilizing ammonium nitrate supplied by Fertiberia, manufactured using renewable hydrogen, Orica facilitated the deployment of a low-carbon explosive product. This groundbreaking event signifies the transition from conventional explosives to a more innovative and environmentally friendly solution, marking its debut on an industrial scale.

Gonzalo Fernández Ozalla, Fertiberia’s Director for Industrial Development and Projects, stated that “The decarbonisation of mining, a crucial sector for the energy transition due to its role in extracting copper and other essential industrial minerals, is set to begin with the first use of a more sustainable product. The blast marks a further step towards reducing the carbon footprint of mining activities.” Low-carbon TAN represents a transformative opportunity for industry, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional TAN.

Pedro de Andrés Sáez, General Manager of Canteras de Santullán, expressed pride in Fertiberia and Orica's choice of Santullán's quarry for this groundbreaking event in mining, both within Spain and across Europe. He emphasized that the blast signifies the utilization of ammonium nitrate with a reduced carbon footprint. Sáez underscored the company's firm dedication to sustainability, environmental responsibility, and fostering strong ties with the local community, noting that this product aligns with their ongoing commitment to these values.

Jesus Domingo, Orica’s Lead Commercial for Southern Europe, highlighted the importance of safe, efficient, and sustainable mining practices amidst global transitions. He emphasized the significance of the collaboration between Orica, Fertiberia, and Canteras de Santullán in utilizing low-carbon ammonium nitrate, labeling it as a substantial advancement within the explosives sector and the broader mining industry.
