Groningen Seaports has secured a significant €4.4 million subsidy from the European Union's Just Transition Fund (JTF) to construct a hydrogen pipeline. This pipeline will connect the ports of Eemshaven and Delfzijl in Netherlands. The crucial infrastructure project aims to accelerate the region's transition to a green hydrogen economy.
The Kickstart pipeline, developed by the NorthGrid Foundation, is a low-pressure hydrogen pipeline designed to be laid rapidly using innovative techniques. It will offer a high purity of hydrogen, making it a valuable asset for the region's growing green hydrogen industry.
The JTF, a key component of the European Green Deal, has allocated €330 million to the Northern Netherlands for climate-neutral initiatives until 2027. This substantial funding will enable the region to implement various projects, including the development of green hydrogen infrastructure.
The subsidy was symbolically handed over by Delegate Henk Emmens to Groningen Seaports CEO Cas König during the Groningen Promotion Days on November 7. This investment is a testament to the European Union's commitment to supporting climate-neutral initiatives and fostering sustainable industrial development.
In another significant development, energy company RWE has received approval to construct a 100 MW electrolyzer near the Magnum Power Station in Eemshaven. This project will further strengthen the region's position as a green hydrogen hub and contribute to the decarbonization of the energy sector.
The Collaboration-
The JTF is a collaborative effort involving the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, and Friesland, the municipality of Emmen, and the Labor Market Table North Netherlands. Samenwerkingsverband Noord-Nederland (SNN) is responsible for implementing the JTF grants.
HyNetworkServices (HNS) is actively working on the construction of a national high-pressure hydrogen transport network, which will include the pipeline between Eemshaven and Delfzijl. This critical infrastructure will ensure the timely availability of green hydrogen, a vital factor for the region's industrial growth and sustainability.
By investing in green hydrogen infrastructure and production, the Northern Netherlands is positioning itself as a leader in the global transition to a sustainable future.
