Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a public sector oil and gas major under the Government of India, has entered into a strategic joint venture (JV) with a subsidiary of Singapore’s state-owned engineering and energy firm, Sembcorp. The partnership aims to spearhead the development of renewable energy and green hydrogen initiatives across India.

This joint venture is not limited to green hydrogen alone. The two companies will also explore opportunities in green ammonia production, sustainable fuel bunkering, and emissions reduction technologies tailored for port operations. Additionally, they plan to examine other emerging clean fuel solutions that contribute to a low-carbon economy.

The collaboration is expected to blend BPCL’s vast experience in the petroleum and energy infrastructure sectors with Sembcorp’s proven track record in renewable energy deployment. This synergy is designed to support India’s growing need for clean energy alternatives while contributing to the decarbonisation of high-emission sectors.

G. Krishnakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL, reaffirmed the company's commitment to accelerating the transition to renewable energy. He highlighted BPCL’s goal of achieving a 10 GW renewable energy portfolio as part of its broader vision to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This partnership, he noted, aligns with BPCL’s long-term strategy to diversify into green energy and contribute meaningfully to India’s clean energy future.

Vipul Tuli, President & CEO of Renewables (West) and CEO of the Hydrogen Business at Sembcorp, emphasized the significance of the collaboration in addressing climate change challenges. He expressed enthusiasm about working with BPCL to identify and implement decarbonisation solutions for sectors that are traditionally difficult to transition to low-carbon alternatives. Tuli also noted Sembcorp’s substantial presence in India, with over 6 GW of renewable energy assets already in operation, underscoring the company’s strong foundation for expanding into green hydrogen and ammonia production.

India has set an ambitious national target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, positioning itself as a global hub for clean hydrogen production. This joint venture between BPCL and Sembcorp marks a significant step toward achieving that goal and supporting the country’s broader climate and energy security ambitions.

By combining industrial expertise and clean energy innovation, BPCL and Sembcorp’s collaboration is poised to play a pivotal role in driving India’s energy transition and enabling the sustainable decarbonisation of critical infrastructure sectors.

Sembcorp Industries, a state-owned enterprise based in Singapore, operates in the energy and urban development sectors. Until 2020, the company also had a marine division that specialized in services such as engineering and constructing offshore platforms for oil extraction. However, due to underwhelming financial performance, this division was demerged from Sembcorp that year.
