On November 6, 2024, BASF Environmental Catalyst and Metal Solutions (ECMS) inaugurated a new laboratory in Hannover, Germany, aimed at advancing research on platinum group metal (PGM)-containing catalysts and components for anodes and cathodes. This state-of-the-art facility will build on ECMS’s extensive expertise in catalysis and precious metals, focusing on developing next-generation catalysts for water electrolysis, which is crucial for the rapidly growing green hydrogen market.

The laboratory will benefit from the resources of ECMS’s existing Research, Development, and Application (RD&A) laboratories in Hannover, a location that has long been a hub for innovation. "Hannover has been our European center for the development of leading mobile emissions catalysts and systems for 30 years," said Saeed Alerasool, Senior Vice President of RD&A at ECMS. "With its established leadership in catalysis, precious metals, formulation, and coating, Hannover is the ideal place to develop next-generation green hydrogen technologies."

The lab’s primary focus will be on synthesizing and characterizing advanced water electrolysis catalysts, as well as preparing catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs). One of the lab's key goals is to develop low-iridium catalysts. Iridium, a critical component in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers, is expensive and scarce. By reducing the iridium content without sacrificing efficiency or durability, ECMS aims to make green hydrogen production more cost-effective, addressing one of the biggest challenges in the industry.

In addition to this, the laboratory will perform electrochemical testing on CCMs under various conditions to evaluate their performance and degradation. The lab will also support customer-specific projects and fuel cell testing, providing regional customers with essential product development support.

This new facility marks a significant milestone for ECMS as it continues to expand its comprehensive product portfolio that spans the entire hydrogen value chain. By focusing on reducing the costs of electrolyzers and fuel cells, ECMS is helping to drive forward the global energy transition and decarbonization efforts. The lab will also leverage ECMS’s strong partnerships within the business and customer sectors, ensuring that the research remains at the forefront of both technological advancements and commercial relevance.
