Swiss marine power company WinGD has unveiled an exciting new option for its X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engines, enabling them to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as well. This innovative "pre-fit" solution is particularly advantageous for vessels currently under construction for the expected global trade in ammonia, which will also have the capacity to transport LPG.

Referred to as X-DF-P, named after propane—the primary component of LPG—this solution is set to be released in time for initial engine deliveries scheduled for 2027. By that point, operators will likely be scrutinizing their anticipated balance between LPG and ammonia trades, making this flexibility crucial. The X-DF-P engine is primarily designed and optimized for ammonia fuel but is also capable of providing reliable and efficient operation on LPG. With only minor modifications needed, the engine can transition to ammonia use later, offering a seamless shift in fuel types.

Sebastian Hensel, WinGD’s Vice President of Research and Development emphasized the importance of this development by stating, “This highlights our continuous innovation aimed at supporting smarter, sustainable ship power solutions. Our X-DF-A ammonia engine is already seeing widespread uptake among bulk carriers and gas carriers; the X-DF-P offers a valuable intermediate option for gas carrier operators eager to enter the emerging ammonia trade, yet who may be uncertain about the timing and effects on vessel engines and fuel choices.”

The anticipated growth of the ammonia trade is significant, as ammonia possesses properties that make it an effective energy carrier. This characteristic allows it to serve as a viable medium for transporting hydrogen from remote renewable energy production sites to areas where demand is high, addressing a crucial need in the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Moreover, the X-DF-P package will provide operators utilizing ammonia fuel with the flexibility to switch to LPG in the future, enhancing their operational versatility. WinGD has already received multiple orders for its X-DF-A engines from operators looking to participate in this trade through the construction of multi-gas carriers, very large gas carriers, or dedicated very large ammonia carriers. The engine’s injection system can be modified for LPG with only minor adjustments, and due to the similar material requirements for both fuels, many components can be utilized interchangeably, streamlining production and maintenance.

Currently, WinGD is focused on developing engine sizes that are relevant to trade, including bore sizes of 52 and 62 centimetres. This focus ensures that their engines meet the demands of the maritime industry, particularly as it transitions to more sustainable fuel options.

WinGD is dedicated to advancing the decarbonization of marine transportation through innovative energy systems that employ the latest technologies in emissions reduction, fuel efficiency, hybridization, and digital optimization. With its two-stroke low-speed engines forming the backbone of its power solutions, WinGD sets the industry standard for reliability, safety, efficiency, and environmental design, all supported by a robust global service network. Since its establishment as the Sulzer Diesel Engine business in 1893, WinGD has remained headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, continuously leading the charge toward a sustainable maritime future.
