On August 5, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels delivered its first B100 biofuel bunker in Singapore, representing a major step forward in its low-carbon fuels portfolio and supporting the decarbonization objectives of global shipping.

For this delivery, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels utilized the IMO Type II chemical bunker tanker, MAPLE, from Global Energy Group, to transfer 700 metric tons of 100% Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester (UCOME)-based biofuel. The biofuel was supplied to the Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC), Glovis Cosmos, which is operated by Hyundai Glovis.

The UCOME biodiesel provided is a second-generation, waste-based fuel sourced from Southeast Asia. This circular economy approach avoids competing with arable land and is certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system.

Previously, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels' global biofuel bunkering operations involved VLSFO (Very Low Sulfur Fuel Oil) blended with up to 30% UCOME-based biofuel. This marks the first instance where the entire supplied quantity was made up of biofuel, which has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% to 90% on a well-to-wake basis.

“I am delighted to report that our first 100% biofuel bunker was delivered safely and efficiently. This operation underscores our dedication to advancing the shipping industry’s decarbonization goals. We remain committed to innovating and providing sustainable low-carbon solutions as the industry adapts to rapidly evolving market and regulatory conditions,” said Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of Aviation and Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies.

An Electronic Bunker Delivery Note (eBDN) was issued for the delivery, as TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has digitalized its bunker delivery reporting system since the beginning of the year to enhance operational efficiency and safety.

TotalEnergies Marine Fuels has been at the forefront of low-carbon fuel solutions for the shipping industry. It first supplied biofuel bunkers in Singapore in March 2022 and launched its commercial biofuel bunker solution at the start of 2023 to cater to this major bunker hub. The company has also conducted biofuel pilot trials in partnership with the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) and is exploring advanced biofuel blends through its R&D Centre in France.

In addition to Singapore, it has also carried out biofuel bunker deliveries in France and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.

Since 2020, the company has been a significant provider of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and bio-methane bunker fuel in the ARA region, Marseille in Southern France, and, more recently, Singapore.

With over 30 years of industry experience, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels is the dedicated division of TotalEnergies responsible for global bunkering operations. As a long-term partner to the international shipping sector, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels serves more than 200 shipping clients across over 130 ports in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Africa. The company is headquartered in Singapore, with additional offices in Paris and Geneva.

To support its shipping clients in adopting the cleanest marine fuels available, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels is committed to supplying marine LNG, bio-methane, and biofuels at key bunker hubs. Additionally, through its participation in various maritime coalitions and cross-industry R&D initiatives, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels is actively involved in developing decarbonized fuels for the future of shipping.
