In honor of National Biodiesel Day on March 18, 2025, Pilot has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first travel center network in the United States to offer B99 biodiesel for commercial fleets. This groundbreaking initiative began with the installation of a B99 biodiesel fueling station at its travel center in Decatur, Illinois. By bringing B99 into the travel center space, Pilot is helping to expand access to sustainable fuel solutions for long-haul trucking, an industry that faces challenges in reducing carbon emissions.
This achievement was made possible through a strategic partnership with PepsiCo, a leading food and beverage company that operates one of North America’s largest private truck fleets, and ADM, a global leader in agricultural supply chain management and processing. Their collaboration highlights the importance of industry partnerships in driving sustainability and accelerating the adoption of cleaner fuel alternatives in commercial transportation.
B99 biodiesel is a high-blend, low-carbon fuel produced from renewable sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and recycled grease. It is a key solution for reducing carbon emissions in the trucking sector, which has traditionally been difficult to decarbonize. By utilizing B99 biodiesel, fleets can significantly lower their environmental impact while maintaining fuel efficiency and performance. Unlike conventional diesel, biodiesel burns cleaner, contributing to improved air quality and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
A critical aspect of this rollout is the role of Optimus Technologies, a leader in fleet sustainability innovation. Optimus Technologies has developed cutting-edge technology that allows diesel engines to be upgraded to run on up to 100% biodiesel. Their involvement has been instrumental in enabling fleets to adopt B99 biodiesel without requiring extensive modifications to their existing vehicles.
Pilot’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its efforts to support commercial fleets in their transition to cleaner fuel options. “We recognize how important sustainability is to our customers and strive to help meet the growing demand for lower-carbon fuel solutions,” said Eric Fobes, Head of Renewables at Pilot. “Introducing B99 at our travel centers is another step toward supporting fleets that are dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint. This collaboration with PepsiCo, ADM, and Optimus Technologies showcases how industry partnerships can lead to meaningful advancements in sustainability.”
As part of this initiative, Pilot is rolling out B99 biodiesel fueling stations at three locations:
-
Now Open: 4030 East Boyd Road, Decatur, Illinois
-
Coming This Spring: 11957 Douglas Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa
-
Coming This Summer: 8787 South Lancaster Road, Dallas, Texas
This initiative is backed by key industry organizations, including the Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Biodiesel Board, Illinois Soybean Association Checkoff Program, and the American Lung Association. Their support reinforces the broader industry effort to integrate sustainable fuel solutions into commercial transportation.
Pilot’s introduction of B99 biodiesel is a step forward in shaping the future of energy in the trucking industry. By expanding access to alternative fuels, Pilot continues to play a vital role in helping fleets transition toward more sustainable operations.
