NORDEN and global resources leader BHP have embarked on a significant biofuel initiative, marking a milestone in their sustainability efforts. The companies have established a biofuel agreement for around 1,000 tonnes of 100% biofuel (B100) to be used on a voyage from Hay Point, Australia, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, aboard the Capesize vessel NORD Steel. This voyage will see NORDEN use the largest quantity of biofuel ever for a single trip, expected to cut 2,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions compared to using traditional fossil fuels—equivalent to taking 543 fossil-fueled vehicles off the road for a year.

Sarah Greenough, BHP’s Head of Maritime, highlighted the significance of the arrangement, noting, “Since our initial biofuel trial in 2021, BHP has integrated biofuel blends into our major shipping routes. We are thrilled to partner with NORDEN, sharing our commitment to reducing supply chain emissions.”

Jan Rindbo, CEO of NORDEN, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in advancing shipping decarbonization. “BHP’s leadership in accelerating decarbonization is something we deeply value. We are proud to support their efforts in reducing supply chain emissions,” he said. Rindbo added, “Biofuels are central to our goal of decarbonizing our customers’ supply chains. They can be used directly on our fleet of over 500 vessels without requiring engine modifications, providing immediate emission reductions for our customers.”

Since 2018, NORDEN has been at the forefront of biofuel usage, having conducted the first commercial shipment using B100. The company continues to lead the way with its investment in biofuel scale-up producer MASH Makes and the development of the NORDEN Book & Claim initiative. This initiative allows NORDEN to link its emission reductions with customers who are unable to use low-carbon fuels due to trading routes or other constraints.

This partnership underscores the growing momentum towards sustainable shipping practices and sets a new benchmark for the industry, demonstrating how biofuels can play a crucial role in reducing maritime emissions.
