NH3 Clean Energy, formerly known as Hexagon Energy Materials, has taken a significant step toward establishing Australia as a key player in the global clean ammonia market. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Pilbara Ports Authority to explore options for exporting 600,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of clean ammonia from its flagship WAH2 project. This agreement underscores the growing importance of ammonia as a clean energy carrier and maritime fuel in the global transition to low-carbon energy sources.
The MoU outlines a 12-month collaboration between NH3 Clean Energy and Pilbara Ports Authority, aiming to develop the necessary infrastructure and operational frameworks to support large-scale ammonia exports. The agreement covers ship loading arrangements for both international export customers and bunkering services, reinforcing Pilbara’s strategic role in the global clean energy supply chain. By positioning itself as a key ammonia export hub, Pilbara Ports is demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting Australia’s ambitions in the hydrogen and ammonia markets.
As part of the project, ammonia will be transported from the WAH2 production facility to the Port of Dampier using a new-build pipeline. This pipeline will be constructed within an existing infrastructure corridor, minimizing environmental disruption and optimizing logistics. Upon arrival at the port, the ammonia will be loaded onto ships at the bulk liquids berth, subject to berth availability and final commercial agreements. The successful implementation of this export route will play a crucial role in ensuring the efficiency and reliability of ammonia supply from Australia to global markets.
NH3 Clean Energy’s Chairman, Charles Whitfield, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating: “Pilbara Ports have demonstrated their strong commitment to becoming a leading hub for the handling and export of clean ammonia for both international markets and marine fuel applications. As promised in our first gas supply announcement, we are maintaining momentum in project development and will continue accelerating progress toward our final investment decision (FID) in the first half of 2026.”
The WAH2 project is advancing according to schedule, with NH3 Clean Energy targeting the commencement of front-end engineering and design (FEED) by the end of the first quarter of 2025. The completion of pre-FEED engineering marks a critical milestone, ensuring a smooth transition to the next phase of project development. As the global demand for clean ammonia continues to rise, NH3 Clean Energy’s strategic collaboration with Pilbara Ports positions the company at the forefront of Australia’s emerging clean energy export industry.
With the push toward decarbonization, ammonia is gaining traction as a viable alternative fuel for shipping and industrial applications. By securing vital export infrastructure and partnerships, NH3 Clean Energy is paving the way for large-scale ammonia production and supply, reinforcing Australia’s role in the global clean energy transition.
