Neste and HELLENiQ ENERGY have established a strategic alliance to introduce Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into the Greek market. This collaborative endeavor marks a pivotal moment as it signifies the first bulk shipment of blended SAF to Greece, transported via maritime vessels. By leveraging this innovative approach, the partnership aims to enhance the availability and accessibility of sustainable aviation fuel at Greek airports, empowering airlines and passengers to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel.
The delivery of blended SAF will significantly enhance the availability and accessibility of sustainable aviation fuel at airports across Greece, offering airlines and passengers an effective solution to lower greenhouse gas emissions from air travel. This delivery is especially timely, aligning with the peak summer tourist season, which is a vital period for the Greek economy. By providing a greener fuel option during this busy travel period, the initiative supports both environmental sustainability and the economic interests of Greece's tourism sector.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) has been widely recognized as a crucial factor in achieving global aviation emissions reduction targets. Despite its potential, one of the major challenges for the industry has been ensuring a sufficient supply of SAF. This partnership represents a significant milestone, as it marks the first instance of SAF being delivered in bulk to Greece via vessels, rather than the traditional truck transport, thereby reducing transportation emissions. This innovative approach not only enhances the availability of SAF but also supports the broader sustainability goals of the aviation sector. Additional bulk SAF deliveries are planned for the remainder of 2024, further advancing this initiative.
Diomidis Stamoulis, Senior Director of Strategic Planning at HELLENiQ ENERGY, emphasized the company's pioneering role in Greece's sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sector. HELLENiQ ENERGY first introduced Neste's SAF in Greece in 2022 and is now expanding this collaboration to align with their strategic goal of becoming a low-carbon energy provider. The expansion supports the aviation industry's preparation for the European Union's SAF mandate targets set for 2025. Their initiative began with supplying AEGEAN Airlines at Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia," and is now set to broaden across Greece, increasing SAF volumes and availability at more airports.
Alexander Kueper, Vice President of Renewable Aviation Business at Neste, highlighted the significance of their collaboration with HELLENiQ ENERGY in advancing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Greece. Kueper noted that SAF is a key solution for cutting greenhouse gas emissions from air travel. This partnership not only underscores Neste's commitment to supporting airlines in Southeast Europe but also emphasizes the need for collaborative efforts to boost SAF availability and adoption. He expressed optimism about further developing the partnership with HELLENiQ ENERGY to enhance the reach and impact of SAF in the region.
