The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration to advance maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation, and workforce development initiatives. Signed by Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, and Mr. Takaya Soga, President and Group Chief Executive of NYK, on July 2, 2024, this agreement underscores their joint commitment to leveraging technological innovation and sustainable practices to bolster efficiency and environmental stewardship within the global maritime industry.

Aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s updated Greenhouse Gas strategy for 2023, the Paris Agreement, and global energy and climate objectives, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) will collaborate on initiatives to advance a sustainable maritime sector. These efforts will focus on promoting the safe adoption of maritime fuels such as biofuels, methanol, and low or zero-carbon ammonia, following a phased implementation strategy.

In addition to developing tailored maritime training programs for seafarers navigating ammonia-fueled vessels and enhancing essential sustainability skills, the partnership between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) will include leadership initiatives. These programs aim to equip local professionals with the expertise needed to drive the maritime industry's transition towards alternative, environmentally friendly fuels. By fostering a skilled workforce and cultivating leadership in sustainable practices, the collaboration seeks to play a pivotal role in promoting long-term environmental stewardship and advancing global energy and climate goals as outlined in the Paris Agreement and international maritime regulations.

Mr. Teo Eng Dih, Chief Executive of MPA, highlighted the signing of the MoU as a pivotal moment in the enduring collaboration between MPA and NYK. Singapore, a crucial bunkering and maritime hub, is advancing efforts in alternative fuels and workforce enhancement. Teo expressed MPA's anticipation for partnering with NYK to harness synergies and innovate scalable solutions. The goal is to drive advancements in smart and sustainable shipping practices that can positively impact the global maritime sector.

Mr. Takaya Soga, President and Chief Executive Officer of NYK, emphasized NYK's proactive approach to decarbonization, digitalization, and maritime workforce development aimed at fostering a sustainable maritime industry. Highlighting their initiatives in ammonia-fuel-related projects aligned with Singapore's fuel ammonia initiative, Soga underscored Singapore's pivotal role as a global hub port for trans-shipment and bunkering. He expressed NYK's satisfaction in finalizing the MoU with MPA, emphasizing shared goals and the potential for accelerated cooperation. This partnership aims to advance sustainable practices and contribute significantly to the development of the maritime industry.
