During March 2025, the global Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) market experienced a modest uptick in prices in the western region. This price volatility can be attributed to a number of current issues affecting the UAN market. Changing prices of key feedstocks, most notably ammonium nitrate and ammonia, have put pressure on producers' costs.
Further, Geopolitical tensions in major exports and transit areas have also increased uncertainties, driving the volatile pricing trends in the global UAN market.
In the European market, the prices of UAN experienced a modest uptick during March 2025, with France being the most impacted region. This price inclination is primarily attributed to the shortage of material. Prompt availability is tight with limited suppliers available in the regional market. To add fuel to this, UAN supplies from the imported market also remained constrained. At the first half of March Strikes at the French ports led by the dockers for better labor conditions and extended early retirement continue to disrupt the French ports, including Le Havre, Marseille and Fos-sur-Mer. However, as the month progressed, a slight ease in the port congestion was reported, particularly at the Le Havre port. The Vessel waiting time at the port improved to around 3 days from the highs of 5 days recorded in the previously. Further, the suspension of strike during mid-March 2025 reported improved port productivity. Despite this, the country is still grappling with supply shortage. Although the seasonal demand is due to fade soon but still some restocking is being done by the consumers for the forthcoming vegetable sowing.
Meanwhile, in the North American market, the UAN prices experienced significant price inclination owing to tight supply of UAN in the domestic market. Production outages amidst the freezing temperature have exerted pressure on the domestic supplies. Further, delayed or declined imports from the Mississippi river as according to the US Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) ice measurements near the upper Mississippi River have grown thicker, have also contributed to the ongoing supply constraints. Further. On the demand side, purchasing activities have remained modest with traders indulging themselves in proactive stockpiling.
According to ChemAnalyst, the price of UAN is expected to keep fluctuating in the forthcoming months. Anticipated revival in demand for the UAN from the prominent end-user fertilizer market may lead to price surge. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions including trade uncertainties and imposition of tariffs may continue to pose uncertainty in the market.
