Covestro, a global leader in the production of top-quality polymer materials, has introduced a groundbreaking application of Makrolon RE polycarbonate in the production of light switches, plugs, and multimedia sockets, marking a pioneering leap into these realms. Teaming up with ABB, a leading Swiss automation corporation, known for its strong commitment to sustainability, Covestro incorporates its polycarbonate with a minimum of 80% renewable content into ABB's prestigious SAGATM product range.

The debut of Covestro's Makrolon range in 2021 signifies a noteworthy milestone within the industry. Of particular significance is the carbon-neutral certification bestowed upon this polycarbonate grade, validated through a rigorously verified cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment in accordance with ISO standards 14040/14044. This meticulous assessment thoroughly accounts for biogenic carbon sequestration, thereby emphasizing the material's robust sustainability credentials.

The Makrolon RE variant, embraced by ABB, is formulated from over 80% bio-attributed content, as confirmed through the ISCC Plus-certified mass balance method. The primary source of feedstock for this variant originates from organic waste and residues, such as cooking oils and fats. Covestro underscores the exceptional UV stability of this polymer grade, substantiated through stringent testing that simulates two years of horizontal, two-dimensional UV exposure under typical northern European light conditions. Furthermore, the material meets exacting electrical safety standards, boasting high dielectric strength and tracking resistance.

Sven Werdes, ABB's global product line manager, underscores the substantial strides made in sustainability, stating, "Currently, around 75% of our SAGATM range is manufactured with attributed bio-circular materials. Over time, this initiative is projected to decrease annual emissions by approximately 400 tons of CO2 equivalents. Moving forward, we aim to enhance the ratio of these designated bio-circular plastics in our endeavors.

Covestro stands as a global leader in the production of top-quality polymer materials and their components. Leveraging innovative products, processes, and methodologies, the company contributes to sustainability enhancements and enhances the quality of life across numerous sectors. Covestro serves customers worldwide across key industries such as mobility, building and living, and the electrical and electronics sector. Additionally, Covestro's polymers find applications in sectors such as sports and leisure, cosmetics and health, and the broader chemical industry landscape.

The company remains steadfast in its commitment to achieving full circularity and aims to attain climate neutrality by 2035 (scope 1 and 2). In fiscal 2022, Covestro generated sales of EUR 18 billion and operated 50 production sites globally, employing approximately 18,000 people in full-time equivalents as of the end of 2022.
