Colorado [US]: Xcel Energy unveils its plans to establish a Hydrogen hub in a bid to promote clean energy in the eastern plains. The proposal submitted to the U.S Department of Energy is expected to form part of the Western Interstate Hydrogen Hub (WISHH), a multi-state Hydrogen network aimed at providing commercially viable Hydrogen in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Utah.
Although the location in Colorado remains unspecified, the hub's establishment signifies Xcel's commitment to investing in clean energy technology towards achieving 100% renewable energy in Colorado by 2040. The facility will be a key component of the company's eight-project investment towards promoting cleaner energy practices.
Xcel Energy's "green Hydrogen hub" project in Colorado is among the eight vital initiatives in the WISHH proposal. Its strategic location near renewable wind and solar energy facilities, power plant infrastructure, and favorable geography for underground Hydrogen storage, provides a distinct advantage.
If approved, the project could attract $1.25 billion in federal funding for the entire four-state area. Furthermore, once completed, Xcel Energy's project is expected to reduce Carbon emissions by 750,000+ tons annually, thereby advancing Colorado's emission reduction goals and Xcel Energy's clean energy objectives.
Xcel Energy expects to contribute up to $1.8 billion over a ten-year period towards the development of clean Hydrogen producing equipment and infrastructure. This amount represents 75% of the total program costs for the company's involvement in the initiative. As a member of the WISHH team, Xcel Energy is fully committed to spearheading and funding the project to construct and operate stable, clean Hydrogen infrastructure in the area.
Moreover, Xcel Energy is a member of the Heartland Hydrogen Hub - a similar project in which Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin have teamed up to create clean Hydrogen and reduce Carbon emissions in various regional supply chains such as Ammonia-based fertilizers, power generation, and natural gas distribution.
The technologies utilized in the eight projects are proprietary, therefore the application is not available for public access. However, the Bipartisan Infrastructure law offers a competitive application bid process for federal funds.
