Alfa Laval and WinGD have solidified their collaboration through a strategic partnership, marking a pivotal step in the advancement of ammonia as a sustainable fuel for maritime vessels. The joint effort involves Alfa Laval supplying two fuel supply systems (FSS) for the testing of WinGD's ammonia-fueled engine, scheduled to commence in early 2024. The significance of this collaboration lies in its contribution to the maritime industry's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and embracing zero-carbon fuels.

Ammonia is poised to play a crucial role in the maritime sector's pursuit of carbon emission reduction. WinGD is at the forefront of this movement, actively developing ammonia-fueled engines. Their recent milestone was the attainment of the first-ever Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register for the X-DF-A dual-fuel range powered by ammonia.

In the ongoing ammonia test campaign, WinGD has entered into a partnership with Alfa Laval to provide two tailor-made ammonia fuel supply systems for their Engine Research and Innovation Centre in Winterthur, Switzerland. Alfa Laval is set to deliver the FSS for the injector test system and FSS for the engine test bench, marking a crucial phase in WinGD's pursuit of optimized fuel supply for later applications on board ships. This collaborative initiative builds upon the cooperation agreement signed by WinGD and Alfa Laval in 2022, focusing on methanol and ammonia.

Alfa Laval's involvement in the project draws on its extensive technical knowledge in fuel supply technology, catering to both conventional and alternative fuels. The Alfa Laval FCM, recognized as the industry's leading low-flashpoint fuel supply system, will be deployed, ensuring safe and efficient process control through its flexible design and fully automated operations.

Viktor underscores Alfa Laval's commitment to supporting customers throughout the fuel transition, adapting their technology to accommodate various marine fuels. Leveraging their experience with LPG, Alfa Laval stands ready to handle ammonia safely and effectively, contributing to the project's success.

This collaboration serves as a testing ground for the development of both the engine and associated equipment. Alfa Laval's role extends beyond supplying fuel systems, as they commit to exploring and developing a mitigation system for the secure handling of ammonia. The project aligns with Alfa Laval's active engagement in industry initiatives promoting zero-emission shipping.

In 2022, Alfa Laval received approval for testing ammonia at the Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre in Aalborg. Their comprehensive knowledge of ammonia combustion, coupled with expertise in LNG, biofuels, and methanol, positions them as a key player in the development of onboard technologies, prioritizing safety and efficiency.

Alfa Laval's commitment extends to its active participation in initiatives such as the Getting to Zero Coalition and its role as a Strategic Corporate Partner in the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. By partnering with industry pioneers and leveraging its expertise and technologies, Alfa Laval is contributing significantly to the ongoing research on ammonia as a viable fuel alternative.
