Calcium carbide prices stayed low in Asia in March 2025 because of weak PVC demand and plenty of supply. Meanwhile, Europe and the U.S. saw a modest uptick in prices, thanks to stronger construction industries in USA and energy cost challenges. A seasonal boost in demand could lift prices in the months ahead.

In China, calcium carbide prices remained weak throughout March. The slowdown in the downstream PVC sector was the main reason, as many construction projects were delayed. Several PVC factories also went through maintenance shutdowns, adding to the soft demand. On top of that, feedstock coke prices stayed low, which kept production costs down.

Calcium carbide production continued to rise in March, resulting in a slight oversupply in the market. Most downstream buyers focused on spot purchases, showing little interest in forward inquiries. Trading stayed slow, with low order prices signaling a gloomy mood. Exports were weak too, with foreign buyers nervous about the world economy and U.S. trade changes, making it tougher for Chinese makers.

Calcium carbide consumption declined in Asia as weak PVC demand persisted. Despite steady supply, major PVC producers like Formosa and Suzhou Huasu announced shutdowns, adding volatility. India remained reliant on PVC imports from China, Korea, and others, while anti-dumping investigations created policy uncertainty. Limited inquiries and cautious trading slowed transactions, keeping calcium carbide demand and sentiment weak across the region.

Demand for calcium carbide in Japan was also low. The construction sector remained slow, and PVC consumption did not improve. Manufacturing stayed weak, and new construction orders were limited due to financial pressures on infrastructure projects.

In the U.S., calcium carbide prices saw a small increase in March. Demand from the construction sector picked up slightly, helping downstream usage. Housing starts rose, and employment in construction improved. However, concerns remain over labor shortages, fewer building permits and high import costs due to tariffs continue to challenge the construction market.

In Europe, calcium carbide prices edged higher in March. The region faced high energy costs and weak industrial activity. New orders declined across the eurozone, and downstream demand remained limited. Rising energy prices pushed production costs up, supporting slight price gains despite low consumption. Export activity stayed subdued due to global competition.

As per ChemAnalyst, calcium carbide prices may rise slightly in Q2 2025 as construction and manufacturing activities pick up. Post-Ramadan demand recovery in the Middle East and seasonal improvement in Asia could offer support.
