Viridi Energy, a prominent renewable natural gas (RNG) platform, has announced a 20-year offtake agreement with Énergir, L.P. (“Énergir”). Énergir, a Quebec-based energy company, is the largest natural gas distributor in Quebec and, through its subsidiaries, also stands as the largest electricity distributor and the sole pipeline natural gas distributor in Vermont.

Under the agreement, set to start next year, Viridi will supply Énergir with 650,000 gigajoules of pipeline-quality RNG annually from its waste-to-energy facilities located in Brunswick, Maine; Marathon County, Wisconsin; and Bethlehem, New Hampshire. This RNG, representing approximately 50% of the total output from these sites, will generate enough energy to heat more than 10,000 homes for a year.

“Viridi Energy is excited to unveil our new 20-year agreement with Énergir,” said Dan Crouse, CEO of Viridi. “Énergir is well-regarded for its leadership in decarbonizing North American energy. Together with Viridi’s ability to supply utility-quality RNG from our expanding portfolio of assets, this partnership will support Énergir in reaching its goal of carbon neutrality in its energy distribution by 2050.”

“Thanks to Viridi’s experienced team and expertise, we can boost RNG volumes within our network and enhance our solutions for customers aiming to reduce their carbon footprint. We look forward to collaborating on this long-term agreement, which will help us gradually meet our goal of integrating at least 10% RNG by 2030,” said Vincent Regnault, Executive Director, Gas Supply and Renewable Gas Development, Énergir.

This agreement marks the first significant transaction executed through Viridi Energy Marketing and Trading LLC, Viridi’s newly formed commercial division designed to facilitate RNG sourcing from any of Viridi's waste-to-energy facilities.

The three facilities supplying RNG to Énergir are all integral parts of Viridi’s expanding portfolio of RNG assets.

In March 2024, Viridi announced the acquisition of a legacy biosolids digester plant in Brunswick, which will process around 85,000 tons of biosolids from local wastewater treatment plants annually into sustainable RNG. In December 2023, Viridi acquired an ongoing landfill gas-to-RNG project in Bethlehem, anticipated to generate up to 600,000 MMBtu of RNG per year. Additionally, in March 2023, Viridi formed a partnership with Marathon County to convert the county’s landfill emissions into clean RNG equivalent to over three million gallons of gasoline annually.

Viridi Energy is a comprehensive renewable natural gas (RNG) investor, operator, and partner, established by an experienced RNG management team. Supported by Warburg Pincus and Green Rock Energy Partners, the company develops, owns, and operates RNG assets across North America, utilizing feedstocks from landfills, dairy farms, wastewater facilities, and food waste.
