In Lutherstadt Wittenberg on April 19, 2024, Uniper and SKW Piesteritz officially signed an agreement in the presence of Saxony-Anhalt's State Premier, Dr. Reiner Haseloff. The agreement outlines mutual support in the supply, production, and logistics of ammonia and hydrogen derivatives. SKW Piesteritz, Germany's largest producer of ammonia and urea, will supply sustainably produced ammonia to Uniper, while also planning to provide green or blue ammonia in the medium to long term. The collaboration extends to import operations, with SKW Piesteritz utilizing Uniper's import terminal in Wilhelmshaven for easier access to green ammonia imports. In return, SKW Piesteritz will grant Uniper access to port capacities in other European ports through its parent company AGROFERT. The agreement also includes aspects such as distribution logistics, expanding production capacity, and converting ammonia into hydrogen.
The partnership leverages Uniper's expertise in global procurement of low-carbon and carbon-neutral ammonia, including the development of Wilhelmshaven into a landing terminal and energy hub, alongside SKW Piesteritz's proficiency in sustainable ammonia production, distribution logistics, and landing capacities across Europe.
"Our government's objective is to establish a conducive framework for businesses within the state to enact a sustainable transition. The chemical industry within the chemical triangle of Saxony-Anhalt should be provided with opportunities to achieve ambitious climate protection objectives. Through the state's hydrogen strategy, we are presenting prospects that are advantageous for our companies. The agreement between Uniper and SKW Piesteritz exemplifies how such objectives can be realized," stated Dr. Reiner Haseloff, the State Premier of Saxony-Anhalt.
" Partnering with Uniper allows us to bolster our dedication to sustainable solutions tailored to meet the varied requirements of German industry and society. In an era where sustainable industrial growth poses significant challenges worldwide, this partnership serves as a crucial cornerstone. Alongside our ongoing technology development endeavors for our production facilities, our alliance with Uniper constitutes another integral aspect of our long-term strategy to decarbonize our products. We are already assisting our customers in effectively reducing their carbon footprint sustainably, and we plan to refine this approach further. Green ammonia, in addition to blue ammonia, will play a pivotal role in this endeavor." - Petr Cingr, CEO of SKW Piesteritz
