Uniper SE, a leading German energy company, and Kyuden International Corporation, a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power Company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore joint business opportunities in hydrogen and ammonia trading, renewable energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). This collaboration aims to leverage both companies' strengths to drive forward decarbonization efforts and create a more sustainable energy landscape.
The partnership will focus on expanding hydrogen and ammonia trading activities, utilizing Uniper’s global portfolio of low-carbon and green ammonia, as well as other hydrogen derivatives. By combining Uniper’s extensive experience in energy markets with Kyuden International’s established operations across Asia and beyond, the collaboration seeks to enhance supply chain efficiencies and unlock new business potential in these emerging energy sectors.
Additionally, this agreement positions Kyuden International to explore further business expansion in Europe. Uniper’s strong presence and expertise in flexible and dispatchable power generation will serve as a key asset in supporting Kyuden’s strategic growth in the region. At the same time, Uniper will benefit from Kyuden’s knowledge of the Asian energy market, strengthening its ability to navigate and develop opportunities in this high-growth region.
Both companies have expressed a shared commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and contributing to global decarbonization efforts. By working together, they aim to develop innovative projects that accelerate the adoption of hydrogen and ammonia as viable alternatives to fossil fuels while also promoting large-scale carbon capture initiatives.
Andreas Gemballa, Chief Commercial Officer of Global Origination at Uniper, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to collaborate with Kyuden International. Through this multifaceted partnership, we are committed to advancing innovative and sustainable solutions. By combining our expertise, we aim to support Japan’s decarbonization goals while also exploring new business opportunities. We value this collaboration and look forward to driving meaningful change together.”
Takashi Mitsuyoshi, President of Kyuden International, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the potential for mutual growth: “Through our collaboration with Uniper, we aim to expand business opportunities in Europe and other regions by leveraging their extensive expertise. Meanwhile, Uniper seeks to strengthen its presence in Asia, where we have deep market knowledge. This complementary synergy is expected to drive further growth for both companies. Moving forward, we will work towards providing optimal solutions to address the energy challenges faced by customers worldwide.”
As Uniper and Kyuden International deepen their cooperation, this partnership is expected to play a crucial role in the global transition to cleaner energy sources. By harnessing ammonia, hydrogen, and CCUS technologies, both companies are positioning themselves at the forefront of sustainable energy development.
