The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization in Turkey has officially initiated the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process for a comprehensive project proposed by Eregli Demir ve Çelik (Erdemir), a prominent Turkish steelmaker. The project encompasses various components, including the construction of coke battery No. 5, a new sinter factory, a second cold rolling mill, a new hydrogen facility, and the implementation of the first cold rolling mill tin anode cast house automation project in Zonguldak.

Although the exact investment cost for this ambitious project has not been disclosed, Erdemir is strategically planning the timeline for its execution. The disassembly of the first hydrogen facility is slated to commence in June 2025, followed by the installation of new equipment in September of the same year. The second cold rolling mill and the new hydrogen facility are expected to be commissioned by the end of September 2025. The hydrogen facility, designed with a capacity of 600 Nm³/h, will adopt the electrolysis method for hydrogen production.

The envisioned coke batteries, upon becoming operational, will contribute to the overall annual production capacity of Erdemir's coke plants, reaching an impressive 1.8 million metric tons. Concurrently, the schedule for the commissioning of the new cold rolling mill tin anode cast house indicates that it is slated for the final quarter of 2025.

This comprehensive project reflects Erdemir's commitment to advancing its capabilities and technological infrastructure in the steel manufacturing sector. The proposed initiatives, from the new sinter factory to the automation of the first cold rolling mill tin anode cast house, underscore Erdemir's proactive approach to modernizing its operations.

The adoption of electrolysis for hydrogen production aligns with contemporary trends in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. Hydrogen, produced through this method, is recognized for its potential as a clean energy source, contributing to Erdemir's commitment to environmental responsibility.

While the specific details of the investment remain undisclosed, Erdemir's strategic planning and initiation of the environmental impact assessment process signal a significant milestone in the company's growth trajectory. The expansion of coke plant capacities and the introduction of advanced technologies in the steel production process position Erdemir as a key player in Turkey's steel industry.

Erdemir's multifaceted project in Zonguldak, encompassing coke battery expansion, new sinter facilities, and advanced automation, marks a pivotal moment in the company's evolution. The timeline for project milestones, including the commissioning of the hydrogen facility and the new cold rolling mill tin anode cast house, highlights Erdemir's dedication to progress and innovation in the dynamic landscape of steel manufacturing. The adoption of sustainable practices, such as hydrogen production through electrolysis, underscores Erdemir's commitment to environmental stewardship, contributing to the broader industry's pursuit of cleaner and more efficient production methods.
