Toyo Engineering Corp. (TOYO) has been awarded a contract to supply its proprietary urea technology to Amufert S.A., a joint venture fertilizer company in Angola. The project entails the construction of one of the world’s largest urea production plants, with a daily production capacity of 4,000 tons, in the Soyo region of Zaire Province. This facility marks a major milestone as Angola’s first urea fertilizer plant, significantly reducing the country’s reliance on imports and enhancing domestic agricultural self-sufficiency.

Currently, Angola imports all its urea fertilizer, but with the nation’s increasing natural gas production, this project will enable the local utilization of resources to produce fertilizer domestically. The plant will not only cater to Angola’s internal demand but will also support regional exports, bolstering food security across neighboring countries. Additionally, the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, improve Angola’s trade balance through fertilizer exports, and contribute to the country’s industrial diversification.

As the licensor, TOYO will provide urea synthesis and granulation technologies, leveraging its proprietary ACES21 urea synthesis technology and advanced urea granulation methods. These innovations will facilitate cost-effective plant construction and ensure optimized operating conditions. TOYO’s role encompasses licensing, basic design, supply of proprietary equipment, and technical services to support the project’s successful implementation. Meanwhile, Wuhuan Engineering Co., Ltd. (Wuhuan) has been appointed to handle the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the entire fertilizer complex, which includes ammonia production units and other supporting facilities.

TOYO has an extensive track record in the global fertilizer industry, having provided its proprietary urea technology for over 100 projects worldwide. In Africa, the company has successfully delivered two urea plants of the same 4,000 tons per day capacity for Indorama Eleme Fertilizer & Chemicals Limited in Nigeria, completed in 2016 and 2021. TOYO is currently executing a third project of similar scale in Nigeria, further solidifying its position as a key player in Africa’s fertilizer sector.

Beyond Africa, TOYO has a history of successful collaborations with Wuhuan in various urea plant projects. Notably, the two companies partnered on major fertilizer projects in Indonesia, including the construction of urea plants for PT Petrokimia Gresik in 2015 and PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang in 2023. The proven reliability of TOYO’s large-scale urea technology and its strong partnership with Wuhuan played a crucial role in securing this latest contract in Angola.

This project represents a strategic move for Angola’s agricultural and industrial development, ensuring long-term fertilizer self-sufficiency and economic growth. With TOYO’s cutting-edge technology and Wuhuan’s expertise in plant construction, Angola’s first urea fertilizer plant is set to become a key driver of sustainable agricultural productivity in the region.
