TotalEnergies, in partnership with Basra Oil Company (30%) and QatarEnergy (25%), has commenced construction on the ArtawiGas25 project, a state-of-the-art gas processing facility in Iraq's Basra region. TotalEnergies, holding a 45% stake and serving as the operator, is spearheading this project as part of the broader Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). ArtawiGas25 represents an investment of approximately $250 million and is designed to process 50 million cubic feet per day (Mcf/d) of gas from the Ratawi field that would otherwise be flared. This processed gas will power local plants, providing electricity for an estimated 200,000 households in Basra.

The GGIP, initiated in September 2021, is a $10 billion multi-energy initiative aimed at maximizing Iraq’s natural resources and enhancing the country’s electricity supply. It includes the development of a large-scale gas processing facility with an initial phase capable of recovering 300 Mcf/d of flared gas from three oil fields. This facility will supply gas to generate 1.5 GW of power. As part of GGIP, ArtawiGas25 is a crucial early phase, designed to significantly reduce gas flaring at the Ratawi field by late 2025. Its modular design introduces an innovative approach that could be replicated across other Iraqi oil fields.

ArtawiGas25 will also bring socio-economic benefits to Iraq. During the construction phase, it is expected to create up to 160 direct and indirect jobs for Iraqi nationals, with 30 permanent positions anticipated during the operational phase. The project embodies TotalEnergies’ commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions tailored to the region’s needs.

Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President for the Middle East & North Africa at TotalEnergies, emphasized the importance of the project: "ArtawiGas25 will offer the Iraqi people a clear demonstration of GGIP’s benefits by delivering more energy with fewer emissions. This initiative underscores TotalEnergies’ ability to implement impactful, fast-track solutions aligned with Iraq's governmental priorities and energy requirements. We are eager to advance the GGIP milestones, including initiating construction of the 1 GW solar project in the coming weeks."

Through ArtawiGas25, TotalEnergies aims to not only reduce emissions and enhance Iraq’s energy infrastructure but also set a precedent for similar advancements across the country.

In 2023, TotalEnergies introduced the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) in Iraq, a comprehensive multi-energy initiative aimed at maximizing the country’s natural resource potential to strengthen its electricity supply. The GGIP encompasses four key components: capturing flared gas from three oil fields in southern Iraq to power electric plants, redeveloping the Ratawi oil field, building a 1 GWac (1.25 GWp) solar farm, and constructing a seawater treatment plant.
