TotalEnergies is advancing its 2030 goal of decarbonizing the hydrogen used in its European refineries by collaborating with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at its La Mède platform in southeastern France. This new initiative complements the ongoing Masshylia project, which aims to produce green hydrogen via electrolysis. Together, these projects will help reduce the La Mède biorefinery’s annual CO2 emissions by 130,000 tons.

Air Liquide will design, build, and operate the renewable hydrogen production unit at La Mède, which will have an annual capacity of 25,000 tons. The unit will recycle coproducts from the biorefinery, producing hydrogen for use in the production of biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The total investment for the project is €150 million, with production expected to begin in 2028.

Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, stated, “This renewable hydrogen production project, in collaboration with Air Liquide, will accelerate the decarbonization of our La Mède platform. Nearly a decade after its conversion, La Mède is evolving into a low-carbon hydrogen production hub, contributing to the decarbonization goals of the Provence-Alpes-Côte-D'Azur region."

In parallel, TotalEnergies and ENGIE are advancing the Masshylia project, which will produce 10,000 tons of green hydrogen annually through water electrolysis. This green hydrogen will support the decarbonization of both the La Mède biorefinery and local industrial customers in the Fos-Berre industrial-port area. The partners plan to launch the first 20 MW electrolyser in 2029, pending confirmation of European and French subsidies and required public approvals.

As part of its broader commitment to decarbonizing its operations, TotalEnergies aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its energy production and supply. The company is focused on leveraging low-carbon hydrogen to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from its European refineries. By 2030, TotalEnergies expects these efforts to cut its CO2 emissions by approximately three million tons annually.
