TotalEnergies BioNorrois Plant: A Major Leap in French Biogas Production

TotalEnergies has inaugurated its BioNorrois biomethane facility in Fontaine-le-Dun, Normandy, marking a significant advancement in France's renewable energy landscape. The plant, the company's second-largest biogas unit in the nation, will inject 153 GWh of biomethane annually into the GRTgaz natural gas network, sufficient to supply over 30,000 households. This development underscores TotalEnergies strategic push to expand its green gas portfolio and contribute to France's decarbonization efforts.
Particularly those involved in sustainable agriculture and fertilizer production, BioNorrois's integrated approach to waste valorization and byproduct utilization is noteworthy. The plant's collaboration with Cristal Union, a major sugar producer, highlights the potential for industrial symbiosis in the circular economy. Cristal Union will supply up to 80% of the plant's 185,000-ton annual organic feedstock, primarily beet pulp, demonstrating the effective repurposing of agricultural residues.
A crucial aspect of BioNorrois is its focus on sustainability beyond energy generation. The anaerobic digestion process yields 150,000 tons of digestate annually, a nutrient-rich byproduct. This digestate will be utilized by Cristal Union and the NatUp cooperative as a sustainable, locally sourced fertilizer, reducing dependence on chemical alternatives. This initiative is projected to save over 5,500 tons of chemical fertilizers annually, while also preventing approximately 30,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
TotalEnergies' investment in BioNorrois bolsters its biogas production capacity in France to over 800 GWh, solidifying its position as a leading player in the renewable energy sector. The plant's scale, comparable to its flagship BioBearn facility, reflects the company's commitment to large-scale, impactful renewable projects. Karine Boissy-Rousseau, Vice President of Green Gases at TotalEnergies, emphasized the plant's role in advancing the decarbonization of France's energy mix and promoting circular economy models.
Cristal Union's involvement underscores the synergy between agricultural and energy sectors. Xavier Astolfi, General Manager of Cristal Union, highlighted the company's commitment to decarbonization and the strategic value of valorising production residues. The BioNorrois project allows Cristal Union to convert beet pulp and industrial effluents into biogas and sustainable fertilizers, contributing to the agricultural sector's decarbonization goals.
