TotalEnergies and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation ("SINOPEC") have inked a Heads of Agreement (HoA) to collaboratively establish a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production unit at one of SINOPEC's refineries in China. This unit, co-owned by SINOPEC and TotalEnergies, is slated to have the capacity to manufacture 230,000 tons of SAF annually, utilizing local waste or residues sourced from the circular economy, such as cooking oils and animal fats. SINOPEC has developed its own SAF production technology known as SRJET. Leveraging its position as one of Europe's leading SAF producers, TotalEnergies will contribute its wealth of experience and expertise in technical, operational, and distribution domains.
Yongsheng Ma, Chairman of SINOPEC Group, expressed enthusiasm about this landmark collaboration with TotalEnergies, emphasizing its alignment with SINOPEC's strategy to develop low-carbon solutions not only for China but also for the global community. He emphasized SINOPEC's dedication to providing environmentally friendly and low-carbon energy solutions while concurrently improving the quality and efficiency of its asset portfolio.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, echoed Ma's sentiments, stating the company's pleasure in partnering with SINOPEC, a major player in the global refining industry, to manufacture sustainable aviation fuels and establish a comprehensive SAF production chain in China. Pouyanné emphasized the pivotal role of sustainable aviation fuels in TotalEnergies' transition strategy, aimed at meeting the aviation industry's imperative to reduce its carbon footprint. TotalEnergies has set an ambitious target of achieving 1.5 million tons of annual SAF production by 2030.
TotalEnergies is at the forefront of developing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), which are biofuels derived from waste and residues sourced from the circular economy, such as animal fats and used cooking oils, as well as "e-jets," synthetic fuels tailored for aviation. These sustainable aviation fuels are poised to significantly curtail CO2 emissions from air transport. As a global multi-energy company, TotalEnergies engages in the production and marketing of various energy sources, including oil, biofuels, natural gas, green gases, renewables, and electricity. With a workforce exceeding 100,000 employees, TotalEnergies is dedicated to making energy increasingly affordable, sustainable, reliable, and accessible to a broader population. Operating in nearly 130 countries, TotalEnergies places sustainable development at the core of its projects and operations, striving to enhance the well-being of individuals worldwide.
