Vopak has taken a significant step in expanding its global industrial terminal network by approving the construction of a new 160,000 cubic meter tank infrastructure in Map Ta Phut, Rayong. This facility will support the import of U.S. ethane into Thailand, enhancing the country's petrochemical industry. The expansion comes as part of a landmark 15-year storage and handling agreement signed between Thai Tank Terminal, Vopak’s joint venture, and PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), a leading global chemicals company.
Under this long-term contract, Thai Tank Terminal will develop the ethane storage infrastructure, which is expected to be completed by 2029. The new facility will provide a stable and cost-effective feedstock supply for petrochemical crackers, reinforcing Thailand’s competitive position in the global chemical industry. The availability of ethane as a feedstock is crucial for maintaining cost efficiency and ensuring long-term supply security, particularly as the global energy and chemical markets continue to evolve.
Vopak’s commitment to the Thai market extends beyond this specific project. As part of its broader investment strategy, the company plans to allocate approximately EUR 130 million over the next four years toward storage and infrastructure development in the Map Ta Phut region. While these investments are not tied to a single project, they are expected to contribute significantly to the company’s operational cash flow once commissioned. This move aligns with Vopak’s long-term vision of strengthening its presence in strategic industrial hubs and supporting global energy and chemical supply chains.
The introduction of ethane as a key feedstock aligns with GC’s commitment to sustainability and responsible operations. Compared to conventional petrochemical feedstocks such as naphtha, ethane has a lower carbon footprint, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative. By integrating ethane into its operations, GC aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance the sustainability of its production processes. This initiative also supports Thailand’s broader goals of advancing industrial efficiency while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
The Map Ta Phut industrial estate, where the new facility will be constructed, is already a critical hub for Thailand’s petrochemical sector. Expanding ethane storage and handling capabilities will further solidify the region’s role as a key player in the global chemical market. The strategic location, combined with Vopak’s expertise in terminal operations, will ensure that Thailand remains competitive in the evolving energy and petrochemical landscape.
As global demand for cleaner and more efficient chemical production grows, investments like this will play an essential role in shaping the future of the industry. By securing a long-term ethane supply and enhancing storage infrastructure, Thailand is taking proactive steps to strengthen its industrial base, improve cost competitiveness, and support sustainable growth in the petrochemical sector.
