Technip Energies, leading a consortium with GE Vernova and construction partner Balfour Beatty, alongside technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies, has received the Notice to Proceed from NZT Power Limited for the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project in the UK. The project, having reached financial close, will begin the full Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) package for the Onshore Power, Capture, and Compression contract. This follows the UK government's recent announcement of a £21.7 billion commitment to carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.
NZT Power aims to become the world's first gas-fired power station equipped with carbon capture and storage technology. The plant will capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually, which will be transported and stored by the Northern Endurance Partnership. The plant is projected to generate up to 742 megawatts of low-carbon power, meeting the average electricity needs of more than 1 million UK homes, contributing significantly to the UK's cleaner energy transition.
The project is backed by the UK government and is expected to create over 3,000 construction jobs, with 1,000 operational jobs annually. It will attract private investment and support the UK's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The consortium plans to deliver a highly efficient combined cycle plant and carbon capture facility. Technip Energies will integrate a state-of-the-art carbon capture plant using its Canopy by T.ENTM solution, powered by Shell’s CANSOLV* CO2 Capture System. The plant will also feature GE Vernova’s advanced 9HA.02 gas turbine and benefit from a 16-year maintenance contract for the power generation systems.
The Carbon Capture Alliance (CCA), comprising Technip Energies, GE Vernova, Balfour Beatty, and Shell Catalysts & Technologies, is committed to long-term investments in the UK, with a strong local footprint and supply chain. Arnaud Pieton, CEO of Technip Energies, expressed enthusiasm about the project, highlighting its importance in advancing carbon capture technology and supporting the UK’s climate goals through low-carbon power generation. Maví Zingoni, CEO of GE Vernova, emphasized the role of CCUS technology in decarbonizing the planet and expressed excitement about the project’s potential to set the foundation for industry growth. Leo Quinn, CEO of Balfour Beatty, called the project transformative for both the UK’s energy transition and regional economic growth in Northeast England.
Elise H. Nowee, President of Shell Catalysts & Technologies, highlighted Shell's expertise in carbon capture, noting that the project would play a crucial role in reducing emissions at scale. With the ability to capture up to 2 million tonnes of CO2 annually, NZT Power is a significant step toward the UK’s net-zero future.
