TA'ZIZ has announced the awarding of engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts worth over $2 billion (AED 7.34 billion) on November 6, 2024, to support the development of crucial infrastructure for its chemicals and transition fuels ecosystem in Al Ruwais Industrial City, located in the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi. These contracts are a major step forward in advancing TA'ZIZ’s strategy to build a sustainable, low-carbon chemicals supply chain, while contributing to the UAE’s economic growth and diversification.
A key element of these contracts is the expectation that a significant portion of the funds will be reinvested into the UAE economy through ADNOC's In-Country Value (ICV) program, helping to drive economic development in the Al Dhafra region. This initiative also aligns with ADNOC's goal to become one of the top five global chemicals companies by accelerating its chemicals growth strategy.
Mashal Saoud Al-Kindi, CEO of TA'ZIZ, highlighted the importance of these infrastructure contracts in achieving TA'ZIZ’s vision of a world-class, integrated chemicals ecosystem. He emphasized that the project will support ADNOC's ambitions while promoting industrialization and diversification in the UAE, fostering new local value chains to capitalize on global demand for low-carbon chemicals and transition fuels.
Scheduled to begin production in 2027, TA'ZIZ is set to produce 4.7 million tons per annum (mtpa) of chemicals by 2028. The production will include a range of chemicals previously not manufactured in the UAE, such as caustic, ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, polyvinyl chloride, low-carbon ammonia, and methanol. These chemicals will be used in the production of construction, agriculture, and healthcare products, significantly expanding local manufacturing capabilities.
The EPC contract for the chemicals port, vital for facilitating exports and enhancing connectivity with regional and global markets, was awarded to NMDC Group (formerly National Marine Dredging Company). The port will also support the importation of essential supplies.
The EPC contract for the chemicals terminal, which includes developing storage facilities, pipelines, and storage tanks, was awarded to Rotary Engineering–Abu Dhabi in partnership with Advario, a global leader in energy and chemicals storage. Additionally, Al Geemi Contracting secured the EPC contract for essential infrastructure across the 17-square-kilometer TA'ZIZ site, including internal roads, security fencing, and buildings. Another contract will focus on developing centralized utilities like power transmission, cooling water, steam, and water.
Once operational, the chemicals port and terminal will ensure seamless connectivity for the export of low-carbon ammonia and methanol, as well as imports of necessary materials, supporting TA'ZIZ’s vision of a sustainable chemicals ecosystem.
