Synthomer, a leading global supplier of specialized polymers, has established one of the first International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certified value chains for producing bio-based nitrile latexes. It has partnered with PCS and Neste for the project.
The newly developed bio-based nitrile latexes, manufactured at Synthomer's Pasir Gudang site in Malaysia, offer the same high quality, safety, and performance as their fossil fuel-based counterparts. Crucially, these innovative latexes contain at least 20% bio-based feedstock, enabling glove manufacturers to significantly reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable circular economy.
This pioneering development addresses the growing demand for sustainable solutions within the glove manufacturing sector. By offering a viable bio-based alternative, Synthomer is empowering its customers to transition towards more environmentally friendly practices without compromising on product quality or performance.
The ISCC PLUS certification plays a crucial role in ensuring the traceability and sustainability of materials throughout the value chain. This globally recognized system verifies the origin and sustainable practices associated with bio-based, circular, and bio-circular raw materials, from cultivation to the final product. The mass balance approach used in this system allows for the integration of certified sustainable feedstock into existing manufacturing processes while maintaining traceability and accountability. Synthomer has demonstrated its commitment to this system by achieving ISCC PLUS certification at eight of its manufacturing sites.
Justin O’Doherty, Vice President of Health & Protection at Synthomer, emphasized the company's commitment to innovation and sustainability. "At Synthomer, we are embedding innovation and sustainability across our business, our products, and processes," he stated. "Improving the sustainability benefits of our products is an increasingly important way for us to meet our customers’ needs for responsible solutions.”
O’Doherty highlighted Synthomer's leadership in driving sustainability and circularity within the industry through ISCC PLUS certification. "The integration of bio-based feedstock materials at Pasir Gudang means we are at the forefront of efforts to meet the growing demand for bio-based or circular certified NBR grades for glove manufacturing," he added.
This partnership between Synthomer, Neste, and PCS represents a significant advancement in sustainable materials for the health and protection sector. By creating a certified and traceable supply chain for bio-based nitrile latex, the companies are paving the way for a more environmentally conscious glove industry. This initiative not only benefits glove manufacturers but also contributes to a broader shift towards sustainable practices across various sectors.
