On January 21, 2025, Synthica Energy, a leader in anaerobic digestion and renewable natural gas (RNG) development, announced that Clark Water, a division of Clark Construction Group specializing in water and wastewater infrastructure, has been contracted to oversee the construction of Synthica’s new anaerobic digestion and RNG facility in Rome, Georgia. Clark Water has received a limited Notice to Proceed, and construction officially began in October 2024.

The Rome facility, set to become operational in 2026, is one of three projects currently under development by Synthica Energy, alongside similar initiatives in Cincinnati, Ohio, and San Antonio, Texas. This facility underscores Synthica's commitment to delivering sustainable, community-focused solutions. Grant Gibson, Synthica Energy’s co-founder and Chief Development Officer, stated, “Our mission is to provide communities and industries with environmentally responsible solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create renewable energy, and foster a circular economy. Partnering with Clark Water aligns with our shared vision of reducing waste and building a cleaner, more resilient future.”

Once completed, the Rome facility is expected to divert up to 250,000 tons of organic waste annually from local landfills, converting it into pipeline-ready RNG. This renewable energy source will help displace fossil fuel use in the local community. The 10-acre site will feature an advanced anaerobic digestion system, state-of-the-art waste pre-processing and depackaging capabilities, advanced odor control measures, and an on-site wastewater pre-treatment system.

Brian Walker, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Clark Water, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, saying, “Clark is dedicated to projects that improve the communities where we work and live. We are excited to collaborate with Synthica Energy on this groundbreaking project in Rome, Georgia. This facility represents a transformative approach to energy production, reducing landfill-bound organic waste while providing clean, renewable energy.”

A key milestone was recently achieved with the successful pouring of the facility’s first concrete equipment foundation pad, signaling steady progress in construction. Synthica is actively engaging manufacturers and distributors across Greater Atlanta to secure contracts for organic waste feedstocks. These feedstocks will include a diverse range of materials, such as byproducts from food and beverage manufacturing, expired or damaged produce, spent yeast, and repackaged beverages like expired beer.

The Rome facility exemplifies Synthica Energy’s vision for innovation in waste management and renewable energy. By combining cutting-edge technology with strategic partnerships, Synthica aims to drive impactful change in how communities manage waste and meet energy needs sustainably.

Synthica Energy, established in 2017, specializes in renewable natural gas (RNG) development through anaerobic digestion facilities across the United States. The company is actively advancing projects in cities such as Cincinnati, Atlanta, San Antonio, New Orleans, Louisville, and other urban markets. Synthica has secured long-term agreements to manage organic waste for prominent manufacturers in these regions.
