Statera Energy has submitted plans to build the UK’s first utility-scale green hydrogen project, known as Kintore Hydrogen, in Aberdeenshire. The project aims to support the transition to a renewable-led power system by using excess renewable energy, such as wind power, to produce green hydrogen. Once completed, Kintore Hydrogen is set to become the largest project of its kind in Europe. The initial phase will have 500 MW of operational capacity by 2028, with the potential to reach a full capacity of 3 GW, which could help reduce up to 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually.

This ambitious project is expected to play a key role in balancing the UK’s energy grid, making it easier to integrate renewable energy sources like offshore wind. Additionally, the green hydrogen produced by Kintore Hydrogen will help decarbonize carbon-intensive sectors, such as heavy industry and flexible power generation. By converting surplus renewable energy into hydrogen, the project will ensure that this clean energy can be stored and used when needed, preventing waste and further strengthening the UK’s energy security.

Kintore Hydrogen is also expected to significantly contribute to the green economy, creating up to 3,500 jobs during its construction phase and 200 permanent, high-quality jobs once operational. The project is projected to add £1 billion to the UK economy by 2035. Statera Energy's CEO, Tom Vernon, expressed excitement about the submission, noting that Kintore Hydrogen could make a substantial impact on the UK’s hydrogen economy, boost energy independence, and help establish domestic supply chains.

According to the Electricity System Operator, strategically placing hydrogen electrolysers in regions like Scotland, where electricity network bottlenecks exist, could save UK consumers £5 billion. Kintore Hydrogen’s location near these bottlenecks and close to abundant water and wind resources in the North Sea positions it perfectly to deliver these savings and efficiently produce green hydrogen.

Vernon highlighted that the growing amount of wind power in the UK makes projects like Kintore Hydrogen essential for capturing energy that would otherwise be wasted. By converting surplus wind energy into green hydrogen, the project can lower production costs, stabilize the energy grid, enhance the UK’s energy security, and support the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to transition.

Founded in 2016, Statera Energy focuses on flexible energy storage solutions to help the UK transition to a renewable-based energy system. With over 1 GW of projects already in operation or under construction and 16 GW in development, Statera has invested £700 million to date, with plans to invest up to £7 billion by 2030.
