South Glengarry Recycling marks a significant milestone as it officially opens its doors, celebrated with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event. Owner Jason Currier, accompanied by his daughter Brianna Rourke-Currier and niece Paige Patenaude, joined forces with South Glengarry Council and staff to inaugurate the plastic film recycling facility situated at 19192 Hay Road.

Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, Mayor McDonald shared his perspective, invoking a Native Proverb that emphasizes our responsibility towards the environment: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children." He commended the efforts undertaken by South Glengarry Recycling, recognizing their pivotal role in diverting substantial quantities of plastic away from landfills and redirecting it towards productive utilization. By doing so, they are contributing to leaving a more sustainable planet for future generations.

Jason Currier, the driving force behind this endeavor, brings a wealth of determination and dedication. With a background as a former Marine Mechanic, he invested four years into researching low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic film recycling. This diligence culminated in a $100,000 investment to acquire equipment specialized in collecting and baling plastic wrap commonly used for shipping, agriculture feed, and marine storage. The impact has been tangible, as Jason has already redirected an estimated 100,000 pounds of plastic film away from landfills since May.

During guided tours of the facility, Jason not only showcased the recycling process but also shared his vision for the future. He articulated his aspiration to expand the facility's footprint, intending to double its size. Additionally, he intends to procure a plastic film recycling line complete with an underwater pelletizer. This innovative addition is poised to transform the collected plastic into reusable pellets, a commodity he plans to supply to plastic manufacturers. Although this ambitious step requires patience, as the intricate recycling unit will take approximately six months to construct and ship from China, it holds immense promise. Once operational, South Glengarry Recycling will emerge as a pioneering force, being the sole low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plastic recycler in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. This accomplishment is a momentous stride towards minimizing the environmental impact of plastics on our ecosystem.

Not content with localized impact, Jason envisions broader collaborations to amplify the initiative's reach. Partnering with Cleanfarms, a respected Canadian organization dedicated to facilitating the recycling of agricultural plastics, he intends to establish drop-off depots beyond the Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG) area. This expansion aims to engage a wider audience and foster sustainable practices within the broader region.

As part of its operational framework, South Glengarry Recycling offers several avenues for plastic collection. Individuals and businesses alike can opt for a convenient drop-off, either for a reasonable fee or schedule a no-cost drop-off at their location at 19192 Hay Road, Unit N, Summerstown. This multifaceted approach ensures accessibility and inclusivity, encouraging active participation in the noble cause of plastic film recycling.

The opening of South Glengarry Recycling heralds a new era of conscious environmental stewardship. Through the vision of individuals like Jason Currier and the collaborative efforts of the community, tangible strides are being taken to reshape the narrative surrounding plastics, fostering a more sustainable coexistence with our planet.
