Solarig, in collaboration with the Regional Government of Castilla y León, has unveiled plans to establish one of the most groundbreaking Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plants globally in Soria. The development is planned for the Parque Empresarial del Medio Ambiente (PEMA) located in the municipality of Garray. The ceremony marking this significant milestone was attended by notable figures including Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, President of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, and Miguel Ángel Calleja, President and CEO of Solarig, alongside other dignitaries.

Named the ‘NUMANTIA SAF’ project, this initiative aims to produce 60,000 tonnes of SAF annually, equivalent to over 12,000 Madrid-Mallorca flights. With an estimated investment of €780 million, the facility will integrate dedicated renewable assets such as a 370 MWp solar photovoltaic plant, a 50 MW wind farm, and a 100 MWh battery storage capacity.

The implementation of the ‘NUMANTIA SAF’ project is expected to stimulate the local economy by creating more than 1,000 skilled jobs, both directly and indirectly. During the construction phase, approximately 870 jobs will be generated, while over 140 positions will be sustained during the operation and maintenance phases. This endeavor will not only spur local development but also maximize the utilization of existing infrastructures. Construction is slated to commence in 2026, with commissioning and operation scheduled for 2028.

As part of the agreement between Solarig and SOMACYL (Sociedad Pública de Infraestructuras y Medio Ambiente de Castilla y León), Solarig will acquire 116,000 square meters within the Parque Empresarial del Medio Ambiente (PEMA) for the plant's location.

Miguel Ángel Calleja, President and CEO of Solarig, emphasized that this groundbreaking facility cements Spain's position as a global leader in the sustainable fuels sector. He highlighted the project's fully circular approach, which leverages biogas from agricultural and livestock waste, alongside renewable resources such as water, wind, and solar energy. By harnessing these local resources with cutting-edge technology, Solarig aims to contribute to the emerging sustainable fuel economy while creating significant local value, generating quality employment opportunities, and driving economic growth in Castilla y León.

Meanwhile, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, President of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, lauded Solarig's commitment to Soria, recognizing the province as an attractive investment destination and a hub for quality employment. He underscored the project's alignment with the regional government's objectives of leveraging the region's energy potential to stimulate wealth and employment while championing sustainable progress, the circular economy, environmental conservation, and the energy transition towards decarbonization.
