South Jersey Industries (SJI) and OPAL Fuels have commenced construction on a new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) production facility at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex in Florence Township, New Jersey. This strategic partnership marks the second collaboration between the two companies to develop, own, and operate RNG assets. With an anticipated annual production capacity of nearly 0.92 million MMBtus, the facility is poised to significantly contribute to the region's renewable energy portfolio. The project aligns with both companies' commitment to environmental sustainability and the transition to a low-carbon economy. By leveraging their combined expertise in energy infrastructure and RNG production, SJI and OPAL Fuels are demonstrating their leadership in the burgeoning renewable energy sector.
The project leverages established technology to capture methane generated from organic decomposition at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex, converting it into Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), a sustainable and cost-effective transportation fuel. The plant's design capacity allows for the annual production of approximately 6.5 million gas gallons equivalent (GGE) of RNG. OPAL Fuels will distribute this RNG through its fueling station network, primarily serving heavy-duty trucks, thereby contributing to emission reductions and fuel cost savings for these fleets. Once fully operational, the RNG produced will significantly lower methane emissions from the landfill, replace fossil fuel use, and is expected to offset over 530,000 metric tons of CO2 annually. This initiative effectively tackles two major contributors to climate change: methane emissions and transportation-related greenhouse gases.
Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels, expressed pride in partnering with SJI to develop the Burlington RNG facility, emphasizing its role in advancing renewable energy production in New Jersey and aiding the state's shift towards a low-carbon economy. He highlighted that Burlington represents the latest addition to OPAL Fuels' expanding portfolio of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) projects. Maurer underscored the value of these projects, which leverage proven solutions to benefit landfill partners and address climate change, addressing emissions at their source and within the transportation sector.
Mike Renna, President and CEO of SJI, expressed pride in partnering with OPAL Fuels to build the Burlington Renewable Natural Gas Facility. He conveyed enthusiasm for advancing New Jersey's sustainable energy landscape, emphasizing SJI's commitment to supporting the transition to cleaner energy solutions through this collaboration.
South Jersey Industries (SJI) is an energy infrastructure conglomerate headquartered in New Jersey. The company operates through two primary segments: SJI Utilities, a regulated natural gas provider serving over 725,000 customers in the state, and SJI Renewable Energy Ventures, a non-regulated subsidiary focused on developing and operating renewable energy projects, including solar, fuel cells, and Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) derived from diverse feedstocks.
