China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) has reached a significant sustainability milestone in Algeria, becoming the first Chinese company to release a sustainability report in the country. The report was unveiled on January 2, 2025, and details the company's extensive efforts in fulfilling its economic, safety, environmental, and social responsibilities while contributing to the vision of a "New Algeria."
Sinopec has invested $3.12 million to enhance safety and environmental protection at the Zarzaitine oilfield. This investment includes the establishment of an electrical safety committee, which has conducted 42 health, safety, and environmental (HSE) inspections to improve operational safety and minimize environmental risks.
Another notable achievement of Sinopec’s commitment to environmental sustainability is its desert water pipeline project in the Tamanrasset region. This initiative, which alleviated water shortages for approximately 50,000 residents, earned recognition through an award for its outstanding contribution to Sino-Algerian cooperation. Additionally, the company has also implemented green construction projects to preserve biodiversity in desert regions, aligning its efforts with local regulations and international environmental standards.
Sinopec’s operations in Algeria are primarily focused on oil exploration, petroleum engineering, refining, and chemical engineering. The company has been expanding its presence in the country, recently reinforcing its partnership with SONATRACH, Algeria's national oil and gas company, through a new agreement related to the Zarzaitine oilfield.
Sinopec’s focus extends beyond environmental sustainability to include significant contributions to local communities. At the Zarzaitine oilfield, Sinopec has created nearly 1,000 jobs for residents, providing opportunities for career development and skill-building.
The company renovated wells in desert areas to ensure access to clean water for remote communities. It has also launched cultural exchange projects, including the “China Bookshelf” initiative, aimed at promoting cross-cultural understanding between China and Algeria. Moreover, Sinopec has donated medical supplies to hospitals and provided educational materials to students, actions that have been widely appreciated by local communities.
Sinopec’s ongoing work in Algeria represents a model of sustainable business practices, where economic investments are closely tied to environmental protection and social development. This partnership between Algeria and Sinopec is not only advancing the country’s energy sector but also improving local living standards and fostering long-term growth. The company’s approach to balancing resource extraction with social responsibility sets a powerful example for future international partnerships in the oil and gas industry.
With these initiatives, Sinopec is demonstrating that energy cooperation can be mutually beneficial, driving both economic growth and positive societal impact.
