Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) and marine infrastructure specialist Höegh Evi have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaboratively establish international supply chains for clean hydrogen. This strategic partnership aims to bolster the delivery of clean hydrogen to Germany and other European locations, with a particular focus on ammonia-based supply solutions.

SEFE’s CSO, Hamead Ahrary, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating: “In our relentless quest to provide competitive clean hydrogen to our customers, we are delighted to partner with Höegh Evi to explore the technical and economic feasibility of different supply chain opportunities. With Höegh Evi’s pioneering floating import terminal technology—including the cracking of ammonia into hydrogen—and SEFE’s deep customer insights developed over decades, we are well-positioned to create global clean hydrogen supply chains that can drive the energy transition.”

The partnership focuses on a comprehensive approach to building international hydrogen supply chains. This includes sourcing ammonia, transporting it via specialized ships, and delivering it to floating import terminals. At these terminals, ammonia will be converted into hydrogen using advanced technology, and the hydrogen will then be supplied to SEFE’s customers through Germany’s hydrogen core grid.

Höegh Evi’s CEO, Erik Nyheim, emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting Europe’s energy transition. He remarked: “Establishing global hydrogen supply chains is a critical step in advancing the energy transition for Germany and Europe. SEFE is leading the charge by investing in Germany’s hydrogen core grid and forming strategic partnerships for cost-effective clean hydrogen production, sourcing, and supply. Höegh Evi is proud to contribute with our expertise in floating infrastructure and unique hydrogen terminal solutions. Together, we are building new decarbonization pathways through global market corridors for clean hydrogen.”

In addition to the supply chain infrastructure, the cooperation will investigate potential sites for floating ammonia-to-hydrogen terminals along Germany’s Baltic and North Sea coasts, as well as other strategic locations across Europe. SEFE will oversee the upstream supply portfolio, including global ammonia sourcing, and manage downstream operations, ensuring hydrogen demand aggregation in Germany and beyond.

Höegh Evi will be responsible for the midstream segment, which includes the transportation of ammonia by ship and the infrastructure of floating import terminals. These terminals will feature Höegh Evi’s innovative ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker technology, enabling the delivery of dispatchable, baseload-ready clean hydrogen for industrial customers.

This partnership represents a significant advancement in Europe’s clean energy landscape, addressing the growing demand for sustainable solutions and driving global decarbonization. By combining their expertise, SEFE and Höegh Evi are setting the stage for a robust and scalable clean hydrogen economy.
