The Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI), a key organization operating under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with H2Global Stiftung, a leading entity in the global green hydrogen space. This MoU aims to create a collaborative framework that will drive the promotion of green hydrogen initiatives, particularly focusing on the exchange of knowledge and best practices related to market-based mechanisms. The agreement marks a critical step toward strengthening India’s position in the global green hydrogen economy, with an emphasis on cooperation between India and importing countries. The goal is to help foster the development of green hydrogen, its trade, and the broader ecosystem that supports its adoption, both in India and worldwide.

The MoU was officially signed on November 19, 2024, by Shri Sanjay Sharma, Director (Solar) of SECI, and Dr. Susana Moreira, Executive Director of H2Global. The ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Mr. Timo Bollerhey, CEO of HintCo; Mr. Markus Exenberger, Executive Director of H2Global Stiftung; Shri Prashant Kumar Singh, Secretary of MNRE; Shri Abhay Bhakare, Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM); Dr. Prasad Chapekar, Deputy Secretary of MNRE; and Shri K R Jyothi Lal, Additional Chief Secretary of Kerala. The presence of such high-level representatives underscores the strategic importance of this partnership in advancing India’s green hydrogen goals.

This collaboration presents India with a unique opportunity to explore and develop joint tender design concepts, particularly those focused on structuring tenders that align with India’s ambitions to emerge as a global export hub for green hydrogen and its derivatives. As India seeks to become a major player in the global hydrogen market, this partnership will facilitate the development of the necessary infrastructure, regulations, and market mechanisms to support large-scale production, storage, and export of green hydrogen. By participating in joint tenders, India will also gain access to international expertise and best practices in hydrogen technology, enabling the country to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving global market.

The MoU also aims to improve India’s understanding of global hydrogen market dynamics, including the complex aspects of trade logistics, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of green hydrogen into existing energy systems. This cooperation will be instrumental in advancing India’s green hydrogen mission, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the country’s broader energy transition goals. As the global demand for clean, sustainable energy solutions grows, India’s ability to participate in and benefit from the international green hydrogen market will be crucial for its long-term energy strategy and economic growth.

Through this partnership with H2Global, SECI and India are poised to play an increasingly influential role in the green hydrogen sector, contributing not only to the country’s energy security but also to the global push for decarbonization. The collaboration represents a forward-looking step in realizing India’s potential as a leader in the green hydrogen economy, providing a blueprint for future international cooperation in this vital area of clean energy.
