Mitsubishi Power, the energy solutions brand of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), had the privilege of welcoming The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr. Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, Premier of Sarawak, to its Takasago Hydrogen Park in Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture. This landmark visit highlights the growing synergy between Sarawak’s vision for a hydrogen-driven economy and Mitsubishi Power’s advanced hydrogen technologies, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration in clean energy solutions.

Takasago Hydrogen Park, established in 2022, is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the integrated development, demonstration, and validation of hydrogen production, storage, and utilization technologies. The park includes the T-Point 2 combined cycle power plant validation facility, where hydrogen-firing equipment undergoes rigorous long-term testing. During his visit, the Premier and his delegation explored the facility’s comprehensive hydrogen value chain. They observed next-generation hydrogen production technologies and validation processes for hydrogen firing in advanced gas turbines, gaining valuable insights into the innovations shaping the global energy transition.

The visit was also an opportunity for strategic discussions between the Sarawak delegation and Mitsubishi Power’s leadership. These conversations focused on identifying collaborative initiatives to strengthen Sarawak’s hydrogen ecosystem and expand its energy portfolio. The Premier highlighted the central role of innovation and technology in achieving the state’s energy goals. “Hydrogen is set to play a transformative role in the global energy landscape, and Sarawak is committed to being at the forefront of this evolution. Collaborating with leading technological players like Mitsubishi Power and witnessing their ongoing research and development efforts are instrumental in unlocking hydrogen’s full potential and driving sustainable growth in our region,” he remarked.

Takuya Murase, Senior General Manager of MHI’s GTCC Business Division, expressed Mitsubishi Power’s dedication to supporting Sarawak’s energy aspirations. “We are deeply honored to host the Premier of Sarawak at the Takasago Hydrogen Park. As Sarawak advances its plans to establish a hydrogen-driven economy, Mitsubishi Power is committed to providing the technological expertise and support necessary to achieve these goals. Our discussions during this visit reaffirm the immense opportunities to drive cleaner energy solutions and advance the energy transition in the region,” he stated.

Mitsubishi Power has already demonstrated its commitment to Sarawak’s energy development through the delivery of a 500MW hydrogen-ready gas turbine for the Miri CCGT Power Plant, developed by Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS). The project, which broke ground in November 2024, features a gas turbine capable of co-firing fuel with up to 30% hydrogen, making it the most advanced power generation facility in the state.

This milestone visit underscores the shared commitment of Sarawak and Mitsubishi Power to fostering innovation and collaboration in hydrogen technologies. By leveraging cutting-edge expertise and aligning efforts, both parties aim to advance the hydrogen ecosystem, support Sarawak’s energy ambitions, and contribute to the global transition to cleaner energy sources.
