Sapphire Gas Solutions (Sapphire), a prominent player in liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG), and renewable natural gas (RNG) solutions, has announced its recent approval from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for the export of domestically produced LNG. This long-term, multi-contract authorization extends through 2050 and permits Sapphire to export up to 51.75 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of LNG, equivalent to 626 million gallons or about 1.7 million gallons per day annually. The authorization applies to both Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and non-Free Trade Agreement (non-FTA) countries, allowing Sapphire to cater to increasing global energy demands, particularly in areas experiencing supply challenges.
“We are thrilled to have received this authorization from the DOE,” stated Sam Thigpen, CEO of Sapphire Gas Solutions. “This approval not only reinforces our commitment to broadening the global reach of U.S.-produced LNG but also highlights our capability to provide innovative energy solutions that help reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy security worldwide.”
Typically, LNG shipments require offloading at onshore facilities before being transported to their final destinations by truck. Sapphire, however, has adopted a more efficient method by utilizing ISO containers for shipping. This innovation enables the company to transport LNG like regular cargo, streamlining the process and allowing for quicker delivery of energy to countries in need. This capability is particularly vital for regions experiencing energy supply disruptions.
As European and Asian countries grapple with increasing energy restrictions and limited access to natural gas, Sapphire is strategically positioned to provide essential energy supplies. The ongoing crises in regions such as Ukraine and Israel, where infrastructure has been severely impacted, have escalated the demand for dependable energy solutions. Sapphire’s approach enables the rapid deployment of LNG, delivering immediate power generation to areas in crisis, whether for short-term relief or long-term recovery.
“Sapphire Gas Solutions is committed to addressing the urgent energy needs of regions hardest hit by conflict, natural disasters, and supply shortages, both domestically and globally,” Thigpen emphasized. “By offering a turnkey solution that can be swiftly deployed, we can deliver energy precisely where it is needed, supporting disaster recovery and the restoration of critical infrastructure.”
Despite a moratorium on large-scale natural gas exports affecting the U.S. natural gas sector, Sapphire can operate under a small-scale exemption in current regulations. This exemption allows Texas-based natural gas production to reach international markets, ensuring the sector can continue thriving amid export restrictions.
“Our ability to operate under this small-scale exemption is a transformative opportunity for Texas and the U.S. natural gas industry,” Thigpen noted. “While the industry faces limitations from the current moratorium, this approval allows us to expand our successful business model globally, delivering clean, reliable energy to areas in need while bolstering U.S. natural gas production.”
With the authorization extending through December 31, 2050, Sapphire can operate under both long-term and short-term contracts, drawing from multiple natural gas facilities across the U.S. and leveraging the extensive natural gas pipeline network. As Sapphire expands its LNG export capabilities, this DOE approval positions the company to meet rising global energy demands while prioritizing sustainability and environmental responsibility.
