Safripol Initiates Construction of Renewable Energy Plant in Sasolburg

In a remarkable development, Safripol, a leading player in the polymer industry, has taken a momentous stride towards promoting renewable energy in South Africa by establishing a cutting-edge 10-megawatt solar plant. This visionary initiative not only addresses the pressing energy supply shortage in the country but also sets a precedent for sustainable energy solutions.
The newly constructed solar farm spans across an impressive 18 hectares just outside the town of Sasolburg, serving as a beacon of innovation in the region. It boasts a remarkable feature: over 15,000 solar panels that perpetually track the sun's trajectory, ensuring maximum energy absorption. These photovoltaic cells efficiently convert the sun's abundant energy into power, primarily fueling Safripol's production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). The plant's annual output is substantial, with approximately 160,000 tons of HDPE and 120,000 tons of PP being produced.
The timing of this sustainable energy endeavor couldn't be more opportune. Safripol's journey into the realm of solar energy began a decade ago at the company's headquarters in Johannesburg. The board of directors embarked on a mission to explore avenues to meet their sustainability objectives, reduce their carbon footprint, and align with key business goals. Today, the fruition of their foresight has manifested in the form of the Sasolburg Photovoltaic solar plant.
But the commitment to renewable energy does not end here. Safripol has even grander plans for the future. A second 10-megawatt PV plant in Sasolburg is on the horizon, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to clean energy. Additionally, energy solutions are being formulated for Safripol's PET production plant in Jacobs, Durban, further solidifying their position as pioneers in sustainable industrial practices.
Nico Van Niekerk, the Chief Executive Officer of Safripol, expressed the company's dedication to environmental responsibility and energy security. He stated that they would be introducing additional renewable energy solutions by FY 2028. According to him, these measures would result in a significant reduction in their reliance on a carbon-intensive coal-based energy source, guaranteeing the company's energy security for the foreseeable future.
One of the standout advantages of embracing renewable energy, such as solar power, is its significant reduction in carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels. Adhir Bisunder, who serves as the Technology and Project Manager at Sasolburg, offered a numerical insight. He detailed that the plant was expected to generate approximately 20 gigawatts of energy. Regarding the reduction in CO2 emissions, he indicated it would be in the range of 20 to 21,000 tonnes of CO2. He likened this reduction to the effect of planting 100,000 trees.
The establishment of the Sasolburg Photovoltaic solar plant marks a pivotal step in Safripol's journey towards a net-zero future. Their commitment to renewable energy not only benefits their business but also contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable environment, setting an inspiring example for industries across South Africa and beyond.
