A minor maritime incident occurred as the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, BW Lesmes, abruptly came to a halt due to technical malfunctioning. Coincidentally, a potent current pushed the oil tanker Burri towards the stationary BW Lesmes, resulting in what was described as a "slight contact." This development was conveyed by the chairman of the canal authority, Osama Rabie.
Promptly responding to the situation, the canal authority dispatched tugboats to the scene to facilitate the movement of both vessels. Subsequent to these efforts, the Singapore-flagged BW Lesmes was effectively towed out of the canal's waterway. Meanwhile, the Cayman Islands-flagged Burri could be observed progressing towards the southern terminus of the canal at approximately 12 pm local time, as reported by the ship tracking service MarineTraffic.
BW LNG AS, the entity responsible for operating BW Lesmes, communicated that the vessel experienced grounding while navigating southbound through the Suez Canal, specifically around 9:35 pm (1835 GMT) on the preceding Tuesday. Despite the low-speed collision, BW LNG AS assured that the incident left the vessel's operational capacities unaffected and its structural integrity intact. Consequently, the vessel was confirmed to remain in a sound condition.
The successful re-floating of BW Lesmes was accomplished at around 3:30 am local time on the ensuing Wednesday. The ship was subsequently directed to the Suez anchorage, where further comprehensive inspections would be carried out to ascertain its seaworthiness and potential impact of the incident.
Osama Rabie, the chairman of the Suez Canal, highlighted that the incident did not seem to result in any significant damage or environmental pollution. Nevertheless, he mentioned that the oil tanker Burri encountered a steering malfunction necessitating repairs.
Renowned as one of the globe's busiest maritime passageways, the Suez Canal holds a pivotal role as the shortest maritime route connecting Europe to Asia. This vital waterway facilitates approximately 12% of the world's total trade movement, underscoring its critical contribution to global commerce. In a vivid reminder of the canal's significance, the infamous incident in 2021 saw the colossal container ship Ever Given lodged across its expanse due to powerful winds. This disruption effectively halted maritime traffic in both directions for a span of six days, triggering substantial disruptions to global trade flows.
In conclusion, a recent maritime occurrence involving the LNG carrier BW Lesmes and the oil tanker Burri temporarily interrupted operations in the Suez Canal. The incident, described as a "slight contact," was attributed to a technical malfunction and a strong current. Swift intervention by the canal authority led to the successful resolution of the situation, with BW Lesmes being towed out of the canal and Burri navigating towards repairs. While this incident didn't yield significant damage or pollution, it served as a reminder of the vital role the Suez Canal plays in facilitating global trade and commerce.
