RES S.p.A. (RES), a leading Italian company specializing in environmental sustainability solutions, has announced a landmark multi-year agreement with Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. for the sale and purchase of pyrolysis oil. This oil will be produced at RES's cutting-edge plastic chemical recycling plant currently under construction in Pettoranello del Molise, Isernia, Italy.
The long-term contract, set to commence in June 2026, guarantees Shell Chemicals Europe B.V. the purchase of the entire pyrolysis oil output from the Pettoranello facility. The agreement also includes an option for Shell to secure additional volumes of pyrolysis oil from a potential second plant that RES Group may develop in the future, signaling a potential expansion of the partnership.
This significant project is projected to generate over EUR 20 million in annual revenue for RES Group upon full implementation. The Pettoranello plant, utilizing BlueAlp technology, is a state-of-the-art facility designed to process up to 20,000 tons of plastic waste annually. It is expected to produce 15,000 tons of pyrolysis oil per year and create approximately 20 jobs upon reaching full operational capacity. The plant’s commissioning is on track for the first half of 2026.
The collaboration with Shell, a global leader in the chemical industry, provides RES with a secure and reliable market for its pyrolysis oil, ensuring the long-term viability and success of its groundbreaking project.
Antonio Lucio Valerio, CEO of RES S.p.A., expressed his enthusiasm about the agreement, stating, "This off-take agreement confirms our strategic decision to invest in pyrolysis technology. Partnering with a global giant like Shell is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. This collaboration not only marks a significant milestone for RES but also represents a crucial step in promoting sustainable and innovative chemical recycling solutions. We are proud to be at the forefront of this movement, transforming post-consumer plastics into valuable resources for industry and contributing to the circular economy."
Thijs Arlman, Global Head of Plastic Circularity at Shell, also commented on the partnership, saying, “Shell is delighted to enter into this long-term agreement with RES, a company with extensive experience in the waste and recycling market. This partnership aligns perfectly with Shell's commitment to providing our customers with more circular chemicals. We look forward to collaborating with RES to develop a robust and viable circular plastic value chain.”
This agreement positions RES as a pioneer in the Italian waste management sector and one of the first companies in Europe to embrace this innovative approach to plastic recycling.
