Honeywell and Repsol have announced a partnership to develop new production methods for biofuels and circular materials, while also exploring the integration of these technologies into Repsol’s current facilities.

The companies plan to expand and commercialize Honeywell's technologies, which use various waste materials—such as fats, oils, greases, biomass, and solids—to manufacture chemicals and renewable fuels at Repsol’s refineries. Their objective is to generate a range of biofuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, while leveraging existing refinery infrastructure. This collaboration aligns Honeywell’s portfolio with the energy transition megatrend.

“As a global leader in sustainable fuel technologies, we actively pursue partnerships that deliver innovative solutions to help our customers and stakeholders reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions through biofuel production,” said Bryan Glover, Chief Growth Officer and CTO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. “Our collaboration with Repsol showcases how Honeywell can implement new technologies to lower carbon emissions while producing biofuels and advanced materials using existing refinery infrastructure.”

The multi-energy company is also exploring the use of Honeywell's UpCycle Process Technology, which transforms waste plastic into Honeywell Recycled Polymer Feedstock for the production of new plastics. This technology can recycle various types of plastics, including colored, flexible, multilayered packaging, and polystyrene. When combined with other chemical and mechanical recycling methods, as well as advancements in collection and sorting, Honeywell's UpCycle Process Technology could potentially enable the recycling of nearly 90% of waste plastics, significantly increasing the amount of plastic waste that can be converted into polymer feedstock.

"Renewable fuels and plastics recycling are key to Repsol’s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050," stated Berta Cabello, Repsol’s Director of Renewable Fuels. "Our partnership with Honeywell to develop and implement innovative technologies will enable us to reduce our carbon footprint and position ourselves as a leader in renewable fuels and hydrogen production by 2030."

The two companies have a longstanding history of successful collaboration across various areas, including the licensing and development of petrochemical units, catalysts, technical support, troubleshooting, digitalization, and technology. In 2023, Repsol chose Honeywell’s Ecofining™ technology to produce renewable fuels from sources like used cooking oil and waste animal fat at its Puertollano plant in Spain. This technology, developed and commercialized in partnership with ENI S.p.A., will enable Repsol to produce approximately 240,000 metric tons per year of renewable diesel and other products at the facility.

Honeywell is an integrated operating company that serves a wide array of industries and regions globally. The company’s business is aligned with three significant megatrends: automation, the future of aviation, and energy transition, all supported by the Honeywell Accelerator operating system and the Honeywell Forge IoT platform. As a trusted partner, Honeywell assists organizations in addressing some of the world’s most challenging and complex issues, offering actionable solutions and innovations through its Aerospace Technologies, Industrial Automation, Building Automation, and Energy and Sustainability Solutions divisions, helping to create a smarter, safer, and more sustainable world.
