Floating Power Plant (FPP) has announced the expansion of its End User Advisory Board by welcoming three influential new members: Repsol, Irish energy provider ESB, and a major unnamed oil and gas company. This expansion is designed to support the company’s groundbreaking demonstrator project, P-Demo, which has secured a €26 million ($26.78 million) grant from the European Commission’s Innovation Fund. The P-Demo initiative, also known as SEAWORTHY, represents an ambitious step toward revolutionizing the renewable energy sector, focusing on developing the world’s first floating wind platform that integrates hydrogen production and storage onboard. This innovative platform aims to provide renewable power on demand for local grids, marking a significant advancement in offshore renewable energy solutions.
The P-Demo project is designed to combine both floating wind and wave energy technologies, which will be deployed off the coast of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. The platform will harness the power of both wind and wave energy to generate clean electricity, with an added capability of producing and storing hydrogen onboard. The integration of hydrogen production with floating wind technology is a pioneering approach that allows for greater flexibility in energy delivery. This project aims to create a system capable of supplying reliable, renewable energy on demand, addressing the challenges of energy intermittency and grid stability often associated with renewable sources like wind and solar power.
The addition of Repsol, ESB, and the unnamed oil and gas major to the advisory board strengthens the project by bringing industry-leading expertise and experience from diverse sectors. Repsol, a global energy company, and ESB, a major Irish utility provider, are both key players in the renewable energy transition, and their involvement will provide valuable insight into the development and deployment of the floating wind platform. The unnamed oil and gas company adds further depth to the board, representing a significant voice in the energy transition and bringing its operational expertise to the table.
The advisory board already includes notable companies such as Air Liquide, Capital Energy, Island Innovation, and TechnipFMC, each contributing their specialized knowledge and industry experience to further the progress of the P-Demo project. These board members offer valuable input through insights, practical use cases, and guidance on overcoming technological and regulatory hurdles. Their collective expertise will be instrumental in helping Floating Power Plant refine its technology and accelerate the deployment of floating wind platforms, paving the way for commercial-scale renewable energy solutions.
FPP’s P-Demo project has the potential to set new benchmarks in the offshore renewable energy sector. By integrating hydrogen production and storage directly into the platform, the project is poised to make significant strides in reducing the reliance on traditional fossil fuel-based energy systems. The ability to produce and store hydrogen on-site, alongside renewable power generation, is expected to provide a stable and dispatchable energy supply. The project could play a critical role in supporting local grids and contributing to the global transition to clean, sustainable energy. The P-Demo initiative is a testament to the innovative solutions being developed to address the challenges of climate change and the energy transition, and the addition of these esteemed members to the advisory board highlights the growing interest and investment in this transformative technology.
