QatarEnergy has unveiled plans to construct a new, world-scale urea production complex that will significantly boost Qatar's urea output, more than doubling current levels. This ambitious project is set to play a crucial role in strengthening global food production and security. The project involves building three ammonia production lines to provide feedstock for four new large-scale urea production trains in Mesaieed Industrial City. Once operational, these facilities will increase Qatar's urea production from the current 6 million tons per annum to 12.4 million tons per annum, making the country the largest urea producer globally. The first of the new urea trains is expected to commence production before the end of this decade.

The announcement was made by His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, during a press conference at QatarEnergy's headquarters in Doha. Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized Qatar's longstanding experience in ammonia and urea production, spanning over 50 years. He highlighted that this mega project will further solidify Qatar's position as a global leader in urea production, contributing significantly to global food security for millions of people worldwide.

Minister Al-Kaabi also underscored the strategic importance of developing this project in Mesaieed Industrial City, which boasts excellent existing infrastructure for the petrochemical and fertilizer industries. The city’s export port, one of the largest fertilizer and petrochemical export facilities in the MENA region, will further enhance Qatar's export capabilities, establishing Mesaieed as the urea production capital of the world.

In his address, Minister Al-Kaabi reaffirmed QatarEnergy's commitment to supplying the world with essential energy products, ensuring continued economic growth, and enhancing global energy and food security. He emphasized the importance of a balanced approach in meeting the ever-growing demand for these products while managing Qatar's natural resources responsibly.

Minister Al-Kaabi concluded by expressing his deep gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, for his wise leadership and ongoing support of Qatar's energy sector. This project represents a significant step in QatarEnergy's ongoing efforts to contribute to global energy and food security, while also reinforcing Qatar's leadership in the global fertilizer industry.
