Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, the Deputy Amir, officially laid the foundation stone for a groundbreaking blue ammonia plant during a special ceremony at Mesaieed Industrial City. The event was attended by His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, alongside senior executives and officials from organizations involved in the project.
This blue ammonia plant, set to be the largest of its kind globally, is a major step forward in QatarEnergy’s commitment to clean energy and its efforts to produce low-carbon ammonia. This innovative solution is aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions and aligns with global goals for carbon reduction.
In his speech, His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi outlined the impressive capabilities of the plant. He revealed that the facility would house an ammonia production unit capable of producing 1.2 million tons annually. Additionally, it will include a CO2 injection and storage unit with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. The project will also benefit from over 35 megawatts of solar power sourced from the solar plant currently under construction in Mesaieed Industrial City. These features make the plant a pivotal part of QatarEnergy’s mission to supply the world with low-carbon energy products, reinforcing its contribution to the global decarbonization movement.
Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized that QatarEnergy will leverage its extensive expertise in building and operating ammonia plants used for fertilizer production. This ambitious initiative is a collaborative effort between QatarEnergy and Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO), showcasing the synergy between the two entities. He further noted that this project is part of QatarEnergy’s expansive growth strategy, which spans LNG, oil and gas exploration, petrochemicals, fertilizers, and renewable energy projects both domestically and internationally.
In concluding his remarks, Minister Al-Kaabi expressed gratitude to the consortium tasked with implementing the project—comprising ThyssenKrupp and CCC—and the dedicated teams from QatarEnergy and QAFCO, whose efforts have brought this vision to life. He also extended heartfelt thanks to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his unwavering support of Qatar’s energy sector and to His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani for inaugurating the project.
With an investment of approximately QAR 4.4 billion, the plant will be strategically located in Mesaieed Industrial City, benefiting from its advanced infrastructure, strategic port facilities, and prominence as a key petrochemical export hub in the Middle East. The facility is slated to commence production by the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant milestone in QatarEnergy’s clean energy ambitions.
