Swedish hydrogen fuel cell provider PowerCell has secured a follow-up order from an undisclosed European OEM manufacturer, valued at approximately SEK 41.8 million (around $3.8 million). The order includes 14 additional units of PowerCell's Marine System 225, which will be deployed on commercial cruise ships. These fuel cell systems will provide auxiliary power to the vessels' internal electrical systems, enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring zero emissions. PowerCell plans to hand over the units by the end of 2025.

The Marine System 225, which PowerCell introduced in June 2024, is a compact fuel cell system that delivers 225 kW of clean electric power. The system has garnered significant attention since its release, with growing interest from various industry players. According to PowerCell, the company has received orders for more than 75 units of the Marine System 225, with deliveries set to be completed by the end of 2025. This uptick in demand highlights the increasing adoption of clean, sustainable energy solutions within the maritime industry, as more companies seek to reduce their carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency on vessels.

PowerCell's recent order marks a significant achievement, coming just a few weeks after the company signed one of the world’s largest marine fuel cell orders to date. In late September 2024, PowerCell secured a SEK 165 million (approximately $16 million) contract with a leading Italian marine OEM manufacturer. This order comprises a total of 56 units of the Marine System 225, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2025. The deal underscores the growing role of fuel cell technology in the maritime sector, particularly in meeting stringent environmental regulations and enhancing the sustainability of shipping operations.

This order follows PowerCell's earlier milestone in September 2024, when it received approval in principle (AiP) from Norway's classification society DNV for a groundbreaking methanol-to-power solution. This solution combines a methanol reformer from RIX Industries with the Marine System 225. The integrated system reforms methanol into hydrogen, which is then used in the fuel cell. This innovative approach is designed to simplify the integration process and enhance safety by ensuring a seamless operation between the reformer and the fuel cell. The approval of this new solution further strengthens PowerCell’s position as a leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, offering a versatile and sustainable solution for the maritime industry.

The combination of growing orders, innovative product offerings, and strategic partnerships positions PowerCell at the forefront of the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources. With the continued development of its Marine System 225 and its new methanol-to-hydrogen solution, PowerCell is well-positioned to play a key role in the decarbonization of the maritime industry, helping operators meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly technologies. As the market for clean energy solutions expands, PowerCell's commitment to innovation and sustainability is likely to yield further success in the years to come.
