Power2X, a prominent green molecules company, has selected Worley, a global professional services firm specializing in energy, chemicals, and resources, to provide engineering and project management services for its groundbreaking eFuels Rotterdam project. This ambitious undertaking aims to establish a world-scale production facility for sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and ultra-low carbon fuels, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry.

The eFuels Rotterdam facility will leverage imported green methanol, derived from green hydrogen and biogenic carbon, as its feedstock. With a projected capacity exceeding 250,000 tonnes annually, the facility will produce e-SAF, a synthetic fuel generated from green hydrogen that offers a significantly cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel.

Worley's involvement encompasses critical early engineering services, including the development of a Class III cost estimate to support the project's preliminary design phase. Furthermore, Worley will collaborate closely with Power2X to define the optimal execution strategy for the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and execution phases. This collaborative approach is designed to establish a robust project baseline, mitigate potential technical and commercial risks, enhance capital expenditure (CAPEX) certainty, and formulate a reliable project schedule. These crucial steps will pave the way for successful project implementation.

Sustainable aviation fuel plays a pivotal role in reducing CO2 emissions, offering a substantial reduction of up to 90% in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. The project's significance is amplified by Europe's ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, which mandates the increasing adoption of SAF, including e-SAF, from 2030 onwards. The eFuels Rotterdam hub is poised to contribute a remarkable 40% of the required e-SAF volume within Europe upon its anticipated startup around the turn of the decade. This contribution underscores the project's critical role in Europe's transition to a cleaner energy landscape.

Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power2X, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, "Building a competitive, future-proof low-carbon energy system requires ambitious projects like eFuels Rotterdam. We can unlock new value chains and deliver clean energy to where it’s needed most, driving impactful progress."

Jelle Nederstigt, President Europe & Central Asia at Worley, echoed the sentiment of partnership and shared vision. "Our relationship with Power2X is based on trust and the common belief that Power-to-X projects are only technically and economically viable when all stakeholders work together towards the same goal: an efficient project development and execution that mitigates risks and provides the CAPEX and LCoX certainty to achieve a positive financial investment decision."
