Port of Açu Operações and YamnaCo Ltd have signed a land reservation agreement to establish a hub for low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives at the Port of Açu's industrial complex in the northeastern Rio de Janeiro State. This partnership will focus on developing a green ammonia project, with Port of Açu reserving two million square meters for green hydrogen initiatives. This new area complements the existing one million square meters already licensed at the port.
Privately owned by Prumo Logística and Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, Port of Açu is one of Brazil's leading oil and gas export facilities, handling 40% of the country’s oil exports. The port is also involved in mining and port logistics, and it is advancing its energy transition efforts by developing a comprehensive platform for the low-carbon economy.
Yamna plans to build a plant capable of producing up to one million tons per year (1MTPA) of green ammonia. The company anticipates reaching the final investment decision by 2027, with production of its first green molecules expected by 2030. This marks Yamna's first project in Brazil and aligns with its strategy of developing large-scale green ammonia export projects in prime locations. Brazil, with its abundant renewable energy resources and strategic export positioning, presents a significant opportunity to scale green ammonia production to meet growing global demand. Port of Açu’s role as a key industrial port and energy hub provides the necessary infrastructure and logistics to support this ambitious project.
Mr. Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo Logística, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: "We are thrilled to welcome Yamna to Port of Açu for their first green ammonia project in Brazil. We look forward to working closely with Yamna to ensure the success of this initiative, which will further establish the port as a leader in green hydrogen and ammonia production."
Eugenio Figueiredo, CEO of Port of Açu, highlighted the strategic advantages of the port: "Port of Açu offers one of the best infrastructures in the country to support the decarbonization of industry, with deep drafts, available land with direct quay access, and a service cluster bringing together multiple suppliers for maritime support. This partnership underscores Açu’s role as a hub for sustainable energy solutions and our commitment to fostering innovative projects that contribute to the global energy transition."
Abdelaziz Yatribi, Yamna’s CEO, expressed pride in launching the company’s first Brazilian project: "We are delighted to launch our first development in Brazil with this large-scale project at Port of Açu. The land reservation agreement process has been highly collaborative, and we are confident that this cooperation will continue through the next phases, leading to a successful Final Investment Decision."
Mr. Kristof Waterschoot, CEO of Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, emphasized the importance of this partnership: "Our collaboration with Port of Açu is vital in achieving our goal of becoming a climate-neutral port by 2050. Açu will serve as a flagship project for establishing a green corridor to export green molecules from Brazil to Belgium. Yamna’s presence strengthens this initiative and exemplifies the pioneering efforts needed to drive the global energy transition forward."
