Phillips 66 and United Airlines have entered into a significant agreement to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to United at Chicago O’Hare International (ORD) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), marking a major step in the aviation industry's push toward cleaner, more sustainable fuels.

As part of the deal, Phillips 66 will deliver 3 million gallons of SAF to United Airlines at ORD, with the potential to increase the supply to 8 million gallons through mid-2025. Additionally, Phillips 66 will provide an initial 600,000 gallons of SAF to United at LAX by the end of 2024.

SAF, produced from renewable feedstocks such as waste fats, oils, and greases, is recognized for its ability to reduce carbon emissions by up to 85% compared to conventional jet fuel. It is fully compatible with existing aircraft engines and airport fueling infrastructure, making it a key solution for airlines seeking to lower their environmental impact.

“We’re excited to continue our collaboration with United Airlines to help achieve its sustainability goals and support the broader aviation industry in its transition to lower-carbon fuels,” said Brian Mandell, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Commercial at Phillips 66. “This partnership builds on our legacy of being a leading jet fuel supplier, and reflects our commitment to providing innovative, sustainable energy solutions.”

A Strategic Move Toward Sustainability

This agreement comes at a time when the aviation industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. SAF is seen as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional jet fuel, with its potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions over its lifecycle. United Airlines, one of the largest users of SAF in the U.S., has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this partnership with Phillips 66 is a critical part of that strategy.

Phillips 66’s extensive infrastructure, including blending hubs in Illinois and on the West Coast, enables efficient SAF distribution to key airports across the country. The partnership is also supported by the Illinois Sustainable Aviation Fuel Purchase Credit, which incentivizes SAF use and encourages further investment in low-carbon technologies.
